ARTS 1201 Art History Survey 1 Final Project Imagine that you are a curator for an art museum in charge of creating and organizing the museum’s displays. Put together a proposal for the next exhibit featuring pieces we’ve studied during this course. The exhibit can focus on one culture, geographic area, style, medium, or artist, or can incorporate pieces from a variety of these categories. There are 4 main tasks included in this project. For this project you will: ● Identify 10 pieces of art to include in your exhibit. At least 5 of these should be from class lectures/readings. ● Write description placards to be hung next to your pieces. These must include the title of the work, the artist’s name if known, the date the piece was created, the medium, and a short description of the important elements of the piece and relevant contextual information. ● Write a report detailing the central topic or theme of your exhibit, which pieces you chose, why you selected these pieces, and why this exhibit is important to the study of art history. About 1,000 words. This report must include references to scholarly research supporting your position and a complete bibliography (not included in the word count). Citations may be in MLA or Chicago format. ● Present your exhibition proposal to your class (8-10 minutes). Grading for this project will be determined by: ● Coherence of your theme or central idea: Does the collection make sense? ● Selection of pieces: Does the art selected adequately support your theme, as described in the written report? ● Understandability of description placards: Do the placards have all the required information, and do they capture the most important elements of the piece? ● Quality of the written report: Does the report adequately describe why the pieces were selected and how they support the theme of the exhibit? Is an understanding of basic art historical methods and theories demonstrated? Are sources correctly cited? ● Quality of the presentation: Is the exhibit thoroughly explained?
