Manuscriipts submitted to journals are peer-reviewed before publishing. These reviews can be brutally honest and may require a significant rewrite of the manuscriipt before being accepted for publication. It is also not uncommon for manuscriipts to be rejected by popular journals.

Researchers may also go through an “on the spot” peer review during the question-and-answer period after verbally presenting their research at conferences. Many of the questions asked may seem like a direct assault on the researcher’s methods and conclusions and can cause apprehension in unprepared presenters.

In addition to manuscriipts and formal talks, posters are a form of publication. Poster presentations require scientists to succinctly present their research. Typically, students present their research as posters at scientific conferences, where they not only present their work, but are also asked detailed questions about their methods and conclusions as well. Many will receive both compliments and constructive criticism on their work and future research directions from their peers, mentors, and session judges.

As you can imagine, scientific researchers must develop a thick skin to get through the peer-review process and learn how to accept criticism with aplomb.

For this discussion:

Watch the video found in your module resources for tips on poster presentation formats.

Read the eBook: Leadership in Science and Technology: A Reference Handbook, Chapter 44: Peer Review as a guide for understanding what a peer review entails. (Attached)

Use the Poster Peer Review Guiding Questions document to assist you in your review. (Attached)

After completing those three tasks, review the following scientific posters:

Seasonal dynamics of Totten Ice Shelf controlled by sea ice buttressing (scroll down to bottom of page)

Microbial diversity in Mediterranean sponges as revealed by metataxonomic analysis

A deep learning cell classification and sorting platform for single cell high-dimensional morphology characterization

In your initial discussion post, select one of the poster presentation examples and conduct a peer review of that poster presentation, focusing on the following aspects: Title, Review of Literature (Background Information), Methods, Organization, Tables and Figures, Conclusions and Recommendations, and Literature Cited. Make sure to explain your reasoning for the statements that you include.
