Critical Reflection 1

Remember: you only need to complete 6 of these by the end of the semester.

After completing the readings and videos for this week, write a first-week check-in essay to consider some questions as we start the semester. (You might write one short paragraph to respond to each question, for example).

What were some ideas that stood out to you this week (either resonating with you, surprising you, or raising questions for you)?
What terminology do you use for your own racial or ethnic identification (i.e. White, Black, Latina, etc.)? Why? Has this been easy or hard for you to settle upon?
To what extent have you reflected on or studied questions of race and racism? Why do you think that is?

The next questions are for you to reflect on what you know right now, as we embark on this course (you will not be graded on getting these “right” – the point is for you to simply think about what you know now):

l ^ |/here do you think the United States is at in terms of racial inequality? (What inequalities have you paid attention to or are you aware of? What do you think has caused them?)

Where have you gotten your information about these topics from and to what degree do you trust it?
What are some QUESTIONS you have about race and racism that you want to learn more about? (I can’t promise this course will address them, but to get you thinking!)

As with all of our weekly reflections, this should be 1-2 pages, double spaced, no citations needed unless you cite material from outside the course. This is simply a chance to engage with the material in a deeper fashion. However, be sure to engage with this week’s course material in your reflection: this is a key piece of the weekly reflections. Please either enter text or upload a pdf or .doc (Word) format.
