The police, courts, and prisons are the three fundamental parts of the juvenile justice system, which is similar to the adult criminal justice system in this regard. More often than not, the outcome of a police contact determines whether or not a child is processed into this system. It is true that the police act as the “gatekeepers” to the juvenile justice system, just as they do in the adult system.
In turn, the police take the first steps in the criminal justice process by deciding how to handle cases involving minors. In fact, the police play a crucial part in juvenile justice.
Police officers often interact with young people, most of whom are unknown. Because of this, the encounters between police and juvenile suspects and offenders account for a very tiny portion of the cases that wind up in juvenile courts.
The police have a variety of options when selecting how to handle occurrences involving kids. Due to the variety and frequently complexity of the circumstances that patrol officers encounter, this freedom is an essential component of police employment (Whitaker). However, given this latitude, one should be cautious with how police handle situations involving minors since it is a significant decision that may formally label minors as delinquents (accurately or wrongly) and bring them under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court system.
