The seven articles for this week are all related to the general theme of independence in Latin America, including what happened after independence (though be sure to pay attention to which actual time period and countries these articles are discussing, along with when they were published). As usual, here are some suggested questions for discussion, though you can also add your own:- What is the main argument in each of these articles? What evidence, and sub-arguments are they using to support their claims? What other assumptions are they making? Which specific parts of the articles tell you all of this? Are their arguments convincing?- In what ways do the perspectives of these articles shape the kind of insights they give about Latin American history?- According to these articles, how was independence achieved? Who was involved? What were their goals? Were there significant differences across different places in Latin America?- According to these articles, to what extent did independence fail to solve problems from the colonial era, while also creating new problems? Was independence in fact a significant change from colonial conditions for the people living in Latin America?
