Assignment 3: Board Proposal (1750 words)

The results from your first staff satisfaction survey at Hazel Hen are in, and they tell a very interesting story. Here is a summary of the key findings:

Restaurant Managers

All restaurant managers responded to the survey. There was no significant difference in response rates between genders.

On average, they reported high levels of job satisfaction and engagement, and moderate levels of commitment. Absenteeism rates were low. These results were consistent across managers of all ages and genders.

Intention to leave rates amongst older managers and male managers are high. An analysis of the open-ended questions asking why they intended to leave suggests that lack of promotion opportunities is the key motivator behind their intention to leave.

Crew members

68% of crew members responded to the survey. There was no significant difference in response rates between genders or age groups.

The average age of crew members was 20 years (with a small standard deviation of 1.23), indicating that we are dealing with a young, transient workforce. 73% of crew members are undertaking some form of secondary schooling or were studying at TAFE or University.

On average, they reported moderate levels of job satisfaction and poor levels of engagement and commitment. Low levels of employee empowerment were reported across all restaurants – and concerningly, female employees reported significantly lower levels of empowerment compared to their male counterparts. Absenteeism rates were moderate, and over 80% of crew members indicated they intended to leave their jobs within the next 3 years.

Further analysis showed that the employee attitude results were not consistent across all restaurants. In approximately 60% of the restaurants, crew members reported moderate to high levels of satisfaction, engagement, and commitment. However, in the other 40% of restaurants, crew members reported very poor attitudes towards their work. Upon further examination, you realize that these poor results were reported from restaurants owned by two of the main Hazel Hen franchisees.

You report these results verbally to Dr. Wing, and she asks you to design a suite of recommendations to address the following:

  • The high intention to leave rate amongst older and male managers
  • The poor levels of job satisfaction of crew members in the restaurants owned by the two rogue franchisees
  • The particularly low level of employee empowerment reported by female crew members across all restaurants
  • How you will evaluate the success of these recommendations in 12 months’ time.

Prepare a written proposal to the Board. The proposal should contain a very brief introduction and conclusion. Support your recommendations with academic studies
