The American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN) The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education includes essential components necessary for current and future nursing practice (McBride and Tietze, 2019). Identification of standards as well as guidance in practice is catalogued in both bachelor’s level components as well as those in advanced levels of practice. The expansion of both Domain 3 and 8 allows the integration of nursing informatics specifically (McBride and Tietze, 2019) and to become familiar with the competency requirements to develop.
Essentials and concepts during this course
According to AACN (2022), Domain 2: Person-centered care includes ensuring that care is coordinated, individualized, and appropriate. This includes resources, patient preferences, unique health determinants, assisting the patient in becoming an active participant, and feeling empowered. This course allowed me to investigate the use of electronic health records and health portals as a means of assisting care coordination with the healthcare team. By allowing the patient to view results and reminders for upcoming tests, there is a sense of involvement in and ownership of one’s health and medical information. Many health portals allow ease of connecting with healthcare providers to help form relationships. Domain 4: Scholarship for the Nursing Discipline discusses the translation and integration of knowledge to renovate and enhance current health care (AACN, 2022). Collaboration to continue the development of new or updated policies, maintaining ethical integrity, and creating methods based on evidence and its integration is discussed. An example of this would be investigating risk factors in the breach of private data and utilizing findings to aid in future breach prevention. Domain 5: Quality and Safety discusses everyone’s right to be provided such when obtaining medical care. This includes protection of their privacy and maintenance of integrity. It is the healthcare team’s ethical responsibility in safeguarding such information. According to Feldman et al. (2018), health information technology and related nursing informatics can assist in identifying potential for adverse events before they happen. An example would be an EMR alert for a potential drug interaction or nephrotoxic medication being introduced to a patient with kidney failure. Evidenced based measures and resources are used to assist with team-based change and support collaboration for patient safety. We need to advocate for change to ensure a safe, secure, and conducive care environment. Domain 8: Informatics and Healthcare Technologies really stands out as having been met with the assistance of this course. By utilizing new healthcare information technology, the ability to process more real time data, increased clinical decision support, and ease of collaborative care among the healthcare team can help deliver a more safe and cohesive service to our patients. By assessing risks either legally, professionally, or ethically, there can be strategies created to help mitigate such hazards.
Integration of theory into current practice
I plan on integrating my newly learning theory into practice by increasing self-awareness and identification of current and future methods within nursing practice. Maintaining an inquiring mind to keep looking forward will help. Since health information technology is continuing to grow at such rapid rates, there needs to be expansion in education as well as leadership in nursing informatics roles. An awareness of understanding regarding one’s ethical responsibilities will help aid in future nursing experiences. With continued use of electronic health records and integration of evolving technologies, there is a chance to reach a greater audience quicker. I plan on assessing how I can continue to grow in this and become a useful resource for others. Self-reflection will be useful in determining how competent I am within AACN’s essentials.
Improvements in Patient Outcomes
Integrations of these essentials can improve patient outcomes by ensuring we are providing competent care. According to Delbanco and Gerteis (2022), patients want to be certain they are receiving competent and quality care. In addition, there needs to be dignity and a mutual understanding between the interdisciplinary team and patient. By integration of these essentials, we can ensure our care is efficient and able to meet our patient’s needs. By allowing transparency and active participation in their care, patients can make more informed decisions and be more invested in their healthcare.

Nursing Informatics was so much more than I expected. When I started this course, I thought it primarily dealt with computers. I never imagined all the things I would learn regarding security breaches and regulations set by policymakers. It was interesting to learn how much data breaches affect our everyday operations. I didn’t realize how much informatics is tied into my current practice as a nurse. This course has taught me about regulatory bodies that provide laws and guidelines for safe and effective care. It has also shown me why certain things are built into the electronic health record. Although I know that every aspect of the electronic health record can’t be explained, I appreciated learning why we ask specific questions at every point of contact with the patient.
Informatics is an essential part of a master’s level program. The AACN Essentials is a framework that provides domains and concepts necessary for becoming an exceptional provider while obtaining a Master’s level degree. With healthcare technology growing at an unprecedented rate. It only makes sense to include informatics within the program to help nurses better understand how to effectively incorporate informatics in their daily practice for better patient outcomes.
The essentials that helped me in this program include Domain 8: Informatics and Healthcare Technologies. Within this domain, I can identify communication technologies offered in my current practice to assist patients and their families. Stressing the importance of communication technologies benefits not only the patient but also allows quick access to a provider that may be able to intervene quickly instead of the patient waiting until they see the provider. This feature will also encourage the patient to participate actively in their care outlined in 8.5j (AACN, 2022). This will also incorporate Domain 2 Person-Centered Care. This domain and the EHR also allow the clinician to see everything that is going on in the patient’s health record. According to Delbanco et al. (2022), patients are more concerned with the efficiency and competence of their provider than their image or how enticing the waiting room appears. I have heard numerous times from patients, “doesn’t the left know what the right is doing.” According to Bove (2020), adopting the EHR has provided positive outcomes in patient care. This is evident by showing efficiency and individualized care. The patient is more likely to comply with care and provider recommendations. The other domains that resonate within my practice are knowledge of nursing practice, quality and safety, systems-based practice, and professionalism.
Adhering to these domains and incorporating them into practice will positively impact patient outcomes. Technology is ever-changing and becoming a more practical and permanent fixture in our day-to-day activities. I hope to help incorporate these changes within my unit by better understanding all the red tape behind the scenes to understand why we do what we do. Continuing to learn about the changes in the healthcare field will make me a more well-rounded practitioner not only by continuing education within nursing but how politics and regulations affect my practice.
