What do I need to include in the introduction to my essay?
Below is a checklist of what an introduction must do, and in the order that it must be done:

Explain the problems to be investigated .
Have different methodologies approached things differently? For example, why do modernist-functionalist approaches to nationalism differ so much from ethno-nationalist approaches? Or do they differ – is the gap exaggerated for some reason?
Explain in general terms how you plan to solve these problems, by using the case-studies and theoretical models which you have chosen to use.
Explain what, if any, theoretical apparatus or scholarly approach you’re going to use.
