Each student will choose a country / region / culture to research and write a brief written report (3 to 5 pages of written text – not including bibliography, not including photographs and not including food review) that examines food in the chosen country / region / culture; its cultural significance, nutritional adequacy, and other unique aspects. The paper should be written in APA style. South has resources to assist in writing APA style. You can email your paper to your campuses respective writing lab and our English instructors will make comments to help you improve. They do not copy edit, but they will note APA issues, subject/verb agreement, comma splices, etc. You do need to allow 48 hours (excluding weekends) for turn-around time. Additionally, students can submit papers through Smarthinking, our online tutoring service. In addition to the written report, each student will also prepare a representative dish from the chosen country / region / culture. You will photograph the dish and have 2 people (family members/friends) taste and provide 3-4 sentences describing the food and one additional review by yourself. Include this as an attachment with your written report. The report, photographed dish, recipe and “reviews” from 2 tasters will be worth 120 points combined. Rubrics for all assignments can be found in the course syllabus.
