Further, members of the House serve two-year terms and Senators serve six-year terms, and the President serves four-year terms. Many have debated whether there should be term limits on members of Congress and whether the length of terms should be changed for them, though no effort to impose them have been successful. Should the US impose term limits on members of Congress, either by Constitutional amendment or act of Congress? Further, should the length of the individual terms of members of Congress be changed? For example, should a member of the House serve a six-year term as well, or should a Senator only be allowed to serve four-year terms, etc.? Finally, should there be an maximum-age limit imposed in the qualifications for Congress to compliment the minimum-age limits in the Consitution, e.g. no one over 65 years of age can run for a congressional seat? As you formulate your arguments, consider the arguments for not including term limits and the reason terms have the lengths they do, i.e. 2 years in the House makes them more responsive to the people. Think of elections and campaigning for these seats, how members are elected in a staggered way, i.e. 1/3 of the Congress is up for re-election every two years, and how their term lengths factor into that of the President’s, if they do at all. Requirements for this short essay: Your paper must be: 2 pages (text must at least reach the bottom of the 2nd page), 12pt. Times New Roman font, double spaced, Word Document or PDF format only, with a Bibliography/Works Cited. You can use any citation style you like, e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago, etc. but it must be consistently used throughout your paper. You must use at least three outside sources, such as news articles, books, journal articles, op-eds, class discussions, etc. in your paper. For your essay include an introductory paragraph in which you introduce the topic, articulate the question you are answering, and conclude it with your thesis statement. Following your introductory paragraph will be your body paragraphs, which articulate your arguments and possible counterarguments, and your conclusion, which summarizes your question and arguments, and may include other possible smaller considerations and questions that way on your arguments. Finally, include a bibliography, or works cited, citing the sources you use.
