-
- Carefully read the following:
This project requires you to demonstrate senior leadership behaviour and personal and professional competence by influencing, supporting and providing resources for:
-
-
- at least two individuals and
- at least one team.
-
Due to the nature of this unit’s requirements and the complexity in relation to leading and influencing the individuals and team, this project must be based on the case study provided in the Simulation Pack. You will be collecting evidence for this unit in a Project Portfolio.
The steps you need to take are outlined below. Before you begin, complete page 4 of your Project Portfolio. Then review all of the documents that form part of the Simulation Pack.
This will provide you with sufficient details to inform your assessment work.
-
- Influence, support and provide resources for a team
- Prepare a presentation for the meeting.
As per the case study information, your first step is to prepare for a meeting with the senior management team to discuss the new Strategic Plan and Boutique Builds’ mission, values and objectives. The meeting will also provide an opportunity for input and decision making on operational priorities and activities for the upcoming year.
This meeting will also be an opportunity, as set out in the company’s vision, to encourage employees to contribute innovative ideas and improvements. In order to prepare for the meeting, you will need to thoroughly review the Strategic and Operational Plan in the Simulation Pack (if you have not done so already) and operational priorities.
Your presentation will need to last approximately 15 minutes. It should use graphics, such as images, tables and/or graphs to add interest, clearly present information and provide a visual representation of data. The choice of software is up to you – you may like to use PowerPoint, Canva or similar software with presentation capabilities.
A further 15 minutes should be allocated after the presentation so that you can discuss the operational priorities and activities required to achieve them. At the meeting your assessor will provide some additional ideas for operational activities, which you will need to consider and discuss in accordance with the company’s goals and objectives and the risk management plans identified in the Strategic Plan.
As the staff attending the meeting come from diverse backgrounds, including culture, education and familiarity with strategic planning processes, you will need to ensure that your presentation is free of jargon and presented in clear and concise English. Before you develop your presentation, research techniques to encourage innovation and ideas so you can use them at the meeting.
Your presentation should address the following:
-
-
- Meeting aims (as per scenario information and instructions provided).
- The purpose of the Strategic Plan.
- An outline of the organisation’s mission, vision, values and key objectives, as well as strategic priorities as outlined in the Strategic Plan.
- A discussion of market characteristics and conditions as described in the Strategic Plan, including the global economy and technological advances, as well as environmental trends in relation to the construction industry.
- A discussion of the company’s strategic objectives operational priorities.
- An outline of key risks identified with regard to the Strategic Plan and at least four examples of how Boutique Build intends to manage identified risks.
- A discussion of operational priorities for the year ahead and activities required.
- Assigning roles and responsibilities, as well as competencies based on the job role.
- To do this you will need to review the operational priorities in the Strategic Plan and identify specific operational activities and roles and responsibilities associated with the business expansion – for example, specific marketing activities that will need to occur and actions associated with the setting up of the new display centre.
- Identify at least 10 specific activities, as well as the allocation of responsibilities according to the information about staff roles and competencies in the scenario information.
- This will need to be discussed and confirmed with staff at the meeting.
- An outline of all resources that will be in place for the expansion as per the Strategic Plan.
- An outline of the company’s expectations in regards to ensuring that its objectives, values and standards are adopted in every-day interactions with customers, suppliers and other personnel.
- (You will need to review this information in the Strategic Plan and provide specific examples of expected behaviour.)
-
As part of your presentation, you must build staff commitment by explaining vision and values as a shared vision, to which all staff are encouraged to contribute. Attach your presentation you have developed to Section 1 of your Project Portfolio.
Submit to your assessor for review and marking prior to delivery.
-
- Deliver your presentation to the team.
Deliver your presentation to the senior management team and seek input from staff on the new Strategic Plan, as well as operational activities required to achieve objectives. You will need to be ready to answer questions and discuss ideas.
You will also need to encourage innovative ideas as per the techniques you researched in the previous activity step. During the presentation, you will be required to demonstrate interpersonal skills, build trust and confidence in your team and to influence the direction of discussions and decisions.
To do this you will need to demonstrate your ability to:
-
-
- lead and facilitate the meeting
- clearly and confidently present information
- encourage group interaction
- encourage questions and suggestions as a way of identifying, exploring and building of different perspectives and ideas
- use active listening to confirm information and ideas
- role model ethical behaviour

-
During the meeting, answer questions and discuss suggestions/ideas offered by staff at the end of the presentation, as this feedback will be used to update the Strategic Plan. This presentation can be in person or conducted virtually.
Your assessor can provide you with more details at this step. Make sure you follow the instructions above and meet the timeframes allocated. After you have delivered your presentation, work into Section 1 of your Project Portfolio to develop an email to staff – more instructions are provided in your Portfolio.
Submit to your assessor.
-
- Investigating workplace issues
Assume that it is six months later and the expansion into Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast has proved to be highly successful. However, issues are arising with workplace fatigue.
At a staff meeting, it was identified that some of the staff are working very long hours during the week and are also working at weekends. The long hours are a result of the numerous projects that the company currently has taken on.
Many staff are also travelling extensively due to the interstate expansion. The company’s safe work procedures include the following:
-
-
- No one should work more than 8 hours in a day.
- There should be at least 10 hours’ continuous break per 24-hour period.
- A lunch break of at least 30 minutes should be taken during the working day.
- Individuals should be aware of the hours worked and ensure they are aware of the risks.
-
Staff time sheets for September show the following:
-
-
- Human Resources Manager: shows 180 hours worked over a four-week period (Monday to Friday).
- Break of at least 30 minutes taken each day.
- Marketing Manager: shows 190 hours worked over a 4-week period.
- Shows no lunch breaks taken.
- Operations Manager: shows 14.5 hours worked during three days of the month of September.
- Lunch breaks taken intermittently.
- Administration Officer: 152 hours plus lunch breaks of 30 minutes taken.
-
The Operations Manager has asked you to investigate this issue, conduct research into fatigue management and then communicate your findings to staff as a first step in addressing the issue. Develop a short report (at least a page long) for the staff that includes:
-
-
- an analysis of the data to show that staff have not been meeting the safe work procedures
- health and safety implications of fatigue including:
- problems associated with fatigue
- signs of fatigue
- risks associated with fatigue
- proposed strategies for managing fatigue.
-
To conduct your research, you should identify relevant sources of information on this topic and include the sources of information that you have used in your report. Structure your response by working into the Fatigue Management Report part of Section 2 of your Project Portfolio.
Submit to your assessor.
-
- Influence, support and provide resources for the first individual
- Individual 1.
Assume that the company wants to develop a short media release about Boutique Build’s expansion into the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast markets. The intent of the release is to attract interest in the company and to provide a brief summary of the company and its operations.
You are also going to use this project to provide leadership and support to the Marketing Manager, Jane Smith, who will be responsible for writing the media release under your direction. The media release is to be released to the local press in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
Prepare to meet with the Marketing Manager. Research some guidelines for developing engaging media releases that will promote a positive image.
Document at least three sources in Section 3 of your Project Portfolio. Prepare some information for Jane from the Strategic Plan and the presentation you developed earlier.
The guidelines for the media release are:
-
-
- no more than one page (400 words)

- make sure there is reference to the company’s commitment to green building.
-
Meet with Jane (who will be role played by your assessor) to brief her on the requirements for the media release. During the meeting, you will be required to demonstrate interpersonal skills and build trust and confidence in Jane as a new member of your team.
This meeting will last approximately 20 minutes. To do this you will need to demonstrate your ability to:
-
-

- communicate with Jane in a manner that respects her needs
- use active listening to confirm information and ideas

- be a positive role model to Jane as a valued and new member of the team
- empower Jane to be innovative and take responsibility for developing the media release
- ensure Jane feels she is in a comfortable environment and to feel assured of your trust and confidence in her capabilities.
-
Jane has sent you her media release for review. It has been worked on by her and her new marketing interns, David and Bella.
Compose an email to Jane and her new team of interns congratulating them on a job well done. Make sure your email sets the tone that you have trust and confidence in their abilities and that demonstrates support for their team and an open-door policy.
The text of the email should be in grammatically correct English, written in an appropriate (polite, business-like) style. Submit this as an attachment to Section 3 of your Project Portfolio.
-
- Influence, support and provide resources for second individual
- Individual 2.
Imagine that it is one year later and Boutique Build has expanded into the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast market as planned. You are to assume the role of the Operations Manager.
You are responsible for a number of staff who travel regularly from Sydney to Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast as part of their role. It has come to your attention recently that one of the staff members, Aniko, has been accruing frequent flyer points from business travel and using these points for their own personal travel.
You are unsure if this is allowed or not and if so decide to investigate the situation. Review the company’s Code of Ethics to determine current values and standards.
and to identify whether it addresses the issues of accruing frequent flyer points. Undertake some research and review the Codes of Ethics or similar documents from at least three other companies on how they manage the issue of staff use of frequent flyer points.
Write an email to the CEO that makes a recommendation on whether the practice of accumulating frequent flyer points for personal use should be allowed. Attach this email to Section 3 of your Project Portfolio.
-
- Update the Code of Ethics.
Write an updated version of the company’s Code of Ethics based on your investigation and the response given to you by your CEO. Attach it to Section 4 of your Project Portfolio.
-
- Meet with Aniko (who will be role played by your assessor) to discuss and present the new Code of Ethics and help her to see that she is unable to continue with her current practice.
During the meeting, you will be required to demonstrate interpersonal skills and build trust and confidence in Aniko as part of your team. This meeting will last approximately 20 minutes.
To do this you will need to demonstrate your ability to:
-
-
- clearly and confidently present the information in the Code of Ethics
- encourage questions from Aniko to ensure she understands her responsibilities
- communicate with Aniko in a manner that is respectful yet firm due to the nature of the meeting – ensure that she understands that she is not being disciplined, but that the policy is changing and she needs to adhere to the new Code of Ethics for all future travel
- use active listening to confirm that Aniko has understood
- empower Aniko and help her feel assured that you trust she will follow the new Code of Ethic in future.
- Send an email to all staff.
-
The text of the email should be in grammatically correct English, written in an appropriate (polite, business-like) style and demonstrate positive leadership and role modelling. It should include a summary of the company’s position on the frequent flyer points issue, as well as clear directions for staff with regard to the use of frequent flyer points.
This should include reference to the updated Code of Ethics. Ensure that you use clear and concise language so that all staff can understand the company’s position.
Also make sure that staff understand that they can approach you at any time if they have questions or would like to clarify anything. Attach your email to Section 4 of your Project Portfolio.
Submit the documents required of Section 4 with your Project Portfolio to your assessor for marking.
Note to student: this part of the task does not rely on use of the Simulation Pack or Boutique Build.
-
- Work goals and professional development.
Choose a company that you would be interested in working for, as well as a job role within that company. The role you choose should be at a managerial level, such as a Marketing Manager or Human Resources Manager.
Research and access information relating to the company, including the company’s website and a position description for the role that you are interested in within the company. Your assessor can provide you with assistance in identifying this information if you are having difficulty.
Review the company’s website and the position description for the role you have chosen. For the position that you have identified, consider what your work goals and plans for 12 months would be if you were in that position.
Note down at least five work goals for the job role. Your goals must be SMART goals and must address both personal and work goals, as well as overall work goals for the roles based on the position requirements.
Work into Section 5 of your Project Portfolio and answer all of the questions. Research and review at least four professional development opportunities that would be relevant to the role that you have chosen and that relate to the work goals you have identified in your Project Portfolio.
Also consider your performance throughout your assessment so far. This should include:
-
-
- The effectiveness of your interpersonal skills when interacting with the teams and individuals during the role plays – what areas do you believe you excelled out, and what areas need improvement?
- How effective were your leadership skills in the group meeting?
- Were you able to lead and facilitate the group – what areas do you believe you excelled out, and what areas need improvement?
- Did you find problem solving came easily to you, or do you think you need more help in this area?
- Do you believe you were able to make the group and Jane feel comfortable identify and explore different perspectives to achieve shared company outcomes?
- How effective were you at getting your work done on time?
-
Assume that the organisation you have reviewed allocates a budget of $1,500 per year per staff member for professional development. Your decisions on professional development opportunities should be based on this budgetary constraint.
Use the Professional Development/Networking Plan Template in Section 5 of your Project Portfolio to document each activity. Next identify an additional three professional development opportunities that are free of charge and can be completed easily on your own or with others (such as your classmates).
You will be required to participate in these opportunities and provide a report on them. Complete the Professional Development/Networking Plan Template with the details of the three additional professional development/networking opportunities.
Participate in the three professional development opportunities you identified above. This will have to occur over a period of time so you will need to discuss with your assessor a timeline to complete the activities and the due date for this part of the task.
Complete the Professional Development Report in Section 5 of your Project Portfolio for each activity. Each question in the report should be answered in approximately one paragraph.
-
- Submit your completed Project Portfolio.
Make sure you have completed all sections of your Project Portfolio, answered all questions, provided enough detail as indicated and proofread for spelling and grammar as necessary. Submit to your assessor for marking.
