This is a paper that is focusing on the student to carry out a finite element analysis of one of two problems. The paper also provides additional information to use in the writing of the assignment paper. Below is the assessment description to follow:
Carry out a finite element analysis of one of two problems
Details You are required to carry out a finite element analysis of one of two problems: 1) Bone Healing (Bio-engineering – non-linear materials & possible contact) 2) Deep drawing (Metal forming – non-linear materials & contact) You may choose which problem suits you best.
Task 1. You must find a research paper from a reputable journal describing whichever problem you have chosen. The research paper can contain FEA results, Experimental results or a combination of both. Suggest papers are in the attachment, but you don’t have to use these ones.
2. You must then build a finite element model and validate it against the results contained in the journal paper.
3. Once you have validated your results against those in the published paper you must then use your finite element model to generate additional results not contained in the paper. (For example, in deep drawing you could investigate the effect of varying blank holder pressure on cup height or in the bone healing you could investigate the effect of a different type of loading. – these are examples not instructions).
4. You are required to write a professional engineering report that is suitable for submission as a research article to a scientific/engineering journal.
Notes 1. Firstly, this assignment is deliberately vague. It is to test your ability to think and communicate at masters level. There are no “right” or “wrong” “answers” to this assignment. 2. Secondly, you should work in groups of two. Each report should contain a breakdown of the work and how each member contributed to the project. 3. Warning: the report must be written to masters standard and also must show evidence of thinking at masters level. Unprofessional and immature reports will be marked severely. 4. Fourthly, your report marking will be according to the attached rubric. 5. We have had several plagiarism issues over the past few years – please do not copy anyone else’s work – all reports will be analysed using a text matching algorithm.
