Case Study: David
David is a 22-year-old man who has been living on the streets for the past six years. He was working part-time in a supermarket, but he had a car accident five years ago and hurt his back and has not been able to work since.
David left home when he was 16 because he was repeatedly physically abused by his father. At that time, he started to use cannabis daily and occasionally amphetamines and he has increased his use significantly since he has been homeless. David frequently moves from hostels to rooming houses and crisis centres. David has never been diagnosed with a mental illness but has reported feeling depressed for about six years.
After completing an assessment, David was identified as requiring drug and alcohol counselling, a mental health assessment, a medical examination, housing support, employment and recreational linkage.
Would David’s homelessness be described as primary, secondary or tertiary homelessness? Explain.
