In one high school, a student gets an after-school detention (ASD) if she/he is late for any class. The ASD lasts one hour each time and students are gathered into a classroom with a teacher. Under the teacher’s supervision, the students are encouraged (but not required) to do homework. They are not allowed to talk to anyone or use their phones (or any other electronics).
follow these two steps:
1. Consider this punishment and the behavior to be discouraged by this punishment (that is, being late to class). Determine whether this punishment is effective or not.
2. If you determined that ASD is an effective punishment, why are there still tardy students after ASD has been implemented consistently? If you determined that ASD is not an effective punishment, why does the school continue implementing it?
