Project Task:
You must complete the following activities for successfully completing the project on applying oil-based stain and clear finish on a timber panel. This project involves the following two tasks:
Task1: Apply oil-based stain and clear timber finish
PRJ 2.1 Plan and prepare
- Plan and prepare for the project by making a list of safety considerations, quality considerations, environmental considerations and signage and barricading required.
- Make a list of all the tools, equipment and material required to successfully complete this project.
- Locate a timber panel and mark it with your name.
- Calculate the material required for carrying out this activity, considering the size of the timber panel.
PRJ 2.2 Prepare materials and application area
- Acquire the required material and safely handle it to desired location.
- Prepare the application area by brushing or scrapping to remove all traces of stain.
- Suitably protect adjoining surfaces, maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
PRJ 2.3 Stain bare timber surface
- Rinse the panel under cold water, clean the surface with a sponge or rag and leave it to dry.
- Get the prepared surface checked by your instructer before moving ahead with your project work.
PRJ 2.4 Apply clear finishes
- Sand the entire surface to make it smooth, clean the dust and apply oil-based stain by brush to achieve a unifrom finish.
- Get the first coat of stain checked by your instructer before moving ahead with your project work.
- When the first coat stain is fully dry, apply a coat of oil based clear.
- Get the surface checked by your instructer.
- When the first coat is fully dry, sand lightly and clean the dust.
- Apply second coat of oil based clear and wait till it gets dry.
- Get the surface checked by your instructer.

- Apply putty to fill all holes and then apply oil based pigmented clear finish on the timber panel, using a small foam roller.
- Get the first coat of oil based pigmented clear finish checked by your instructer before moving ahead with your project work.
- When the first coat is fully dry, apply a coat of water based clear.
- Get the surface checked by your instructer.
- When the first coat is fully dry, sand lightly and clean the dust.
- Apply second coat of water based clear finish and wait till it gets dry.

PRJ 2.10 Clean up the work area:
- Clean your equipment and the workplace.
- Store unused material, and dispose paint waste, water and solvents in accordance with the applicable requirements.
Your instructer/ Trainer will be assessing your performace on the basis of satisfactory completion of following stages of the project:
- Correct identification and selection of required tools and equipment in template 1.
- Correct listing of safety considerations, quality considerations, environmental considerations and signage and barricading required in template 2.
- Correct calculation of the material required for carrying out the activity, considering the size of the timber panel.
- Proper selection of stain for the type of timber and existing stain and selecting the appropriate application method for the specified surface.
- Consistency in preparation of stain in proportion to manufacturer recommendation and job specification.
- Appropriate application of stain to achieve required level of sheen, opacity and texture.
- Satisfactory completion of clean-up activities by cleaning the tools, equipment and work area.
- Paint waste, water and solvents are disposed in an environmentally sustainable way compliant with relevant local legislation and regulations.
- The finished surface is free of any holes, indentations, stains and other defects.
- Two (2) coats of clear finish are applied evenly to an appropriate film depth without excessive brush marks, misses, drips, fat edges or visible inclusions.
