Critical reflection on communication in health and social
ASSIGNMENT TASK
Task Description
The purpose of this task is to showcase your ability to reflect critically on your professional journey by focusing on a real-life scenario. You are required to write a 1,000-word reflective account evaluating a real-world case or encounter in a Health and Social Care (HSC) setting, focusing specifically on how you managed and adapted your communication in a verbal/oral format.
Your Professional Journey (Reflective Report Structure)
Step 1: The Self-Audit Progression
Approx. 300 words (LO1)
- Reflect upon the personal traits, values, and driving forces that motivate you to work in health and social care.
- Building upon the SWOT analysis baseline established in Assignment 1, discuss your personal self-awareness regarding your verbal communication skills. What do you find easy and what do you find difficult when speaking with different stakeholders?
Step 2 (LO2): The Reflective Story (Evaluating Oral Performance)
Approx. 400 words
- Real-Life Contextual Oral Interaction: Choose a specific, real-life case, critical incident, or encounter from an HSC workplace or placement setting where you had to use verbal/oral communication (e.g., a hand-over, an interaction with a service user/family member, or a professional phone call).
- Use a recognised reflective framework such as Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle or Johns’ Model to structure your writing. Describe the interaction, analyse your feelings, and evaluate the encounter.
- Focus explicitly on: Analysing how effectively you communicated in that verbal format. How did you adapt your spoken tone, vocabulary, and delivery style to fit that specific audience and context? What did you do well, and what would you alter to enhance your verbal clarity next time?
Step 3: LO5 – The Future Plan (Where am I going?)
Approx. 300 words
- Use the lessons learned from your real-life verbal reflection (Step 2) and self-audit (Step 1) to establish targets for your career path.
- Create clear, actionable SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) for improving your professional communication skills and future development.
Note: The bottom of the image is slightly cut off. The final bullet appears to end with "Time-bound", which is the standard completion of the SMART goals acronym. If you upload the remainder of the page, I can transcribe it with 100% accuracy.
