1. You are a crime analyst tasked with reducing residential burglary victimisation in your area. Using the SARA components of the POP framework, explain the types of things you would want to do to ensure you achieved your goal. (Hint: discuss each of the SARA stages along the lines of examples we worked through in lectures.
Remember the link between theory, data analysis, and targeted prevention. You can propose hypothetical examples of the types of interventions you might try. Explain the types of things you would want to measure to determine if your intervention had been effective. Consider some barriers to implementation and strategies you could use to maximise the likelihood of success.)
2. You are a Murdoch University Criminology Intern at a Community Safety department of a City Council/Authority. You have been tasked with preparing a briefing for the new Mayor/CEO of the city, on ‘What is Community Policing’ and the key factors behind the move to community policing in many jurisdictions in several countries including Australia and the United States.
The new Mayor wishes to have a meeting with the local area Police Commander on Community Policing and crime reduction within his Council area and this briefing is vital for him to be able to discuss these issues intelligently with the Police. (Hint it is important in your work to discuss the four dimensions of Community Policing, the possible benefits of community policing and any possible problems in implementation (and the key factors mentioned above behind its acceptance in many jurisdictions)
3. You are an Intelligence Analyst within a Police Crime Analysis and Intelligence Division of a Police Service. You have been tasked with preparing a briefing for the new Leader of your Province/Nation on ‘What is Intelligence-Led Policing (ILP)’.
The new leader comes from a business background and has no idea what ILP constitutes or even much idea what Police really do.! The Police Commissioner needs a briefing for the new Leader that considers the background and reasoning behind ILP that will provide the Premier/Prime Minister with the substance and breadth of ILP. (Hint it is important in your work to consider and discuss the origins of ILP and why it became important for policing, the intelligence cycle/data continuum, the conceptual model for ILP and the ten lessons learned in its implementation.
Are offenders rational? Explain the role of risk and opportunity in crime. (Hint think of what we covered in exploring the rational choice perspective RTP).
