Second: In 1841, Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of the Transcendentalist reformers of New England, wrote a now-famous essay entitled “Self-Reliance,” praising American individualism and condemning any sort of conformity–ethical, political, social, or religious. Please read just these four paragraphs (they are clearly numbered in this version of the essay): 2, 7, 14, and 27.

When you finish both sets of primary sources I would like you to write a page describing what you think is the
connection between the expansion of democracy during the Jacksonian period and what we might think of as the “cult of the individual” or of individual liberty. Think about it: democracy can (and has) existed without an emphasis on
individual autonomy. America has linked democracy and individualism in a such a way as to make the two inseparable–this linkage has had its benefits, but also, one could argue, its drawbacks. What, in your view, is the source of the connection between the two. This is an exercise in historical thinking, locating causes and effects, and understanding context.
