DEVOTIONAL 1
God Cannot Be Contained
Then Moses said to God, If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, What is his name? what shall I say to them? God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. And he said, Say this to the people of Israel, I AM has sent me to you. (Exodus 3:13-14 ESV)
At a pivotal point in the Old Testament, God calls Moses to be His spokesman to the people of Israel who were enslaved to serve pharaoh. In the midst of this call Moses asks for Gods name. God meets this request with an enigmatic response
tell them the I AM sent you!
It was common in the ancient world of Moses to name the various deities. The gods of Egypt went by many names and they acted much like their human worshippers. Moses was asking what anyone else in his position would do
which god are you? The one true God, however, would not play Moses game. He would not put Himself on an equal plane with the other claims of the gods. He is the great I AM
He is the one and only God to be worshipped.
Today we still try to do the same to God. We try to control Him by equating Him with all our other gods (wealth, status, family, church, education, etc.). Yet God makes it clear in this passage that He will not be controlled by human endeavors. He stands alone as the creator of the universe and the ultimate author of our salvation. He alone became man to bring us to Himself. In your own life, what attempts are you making to control God who cannot be controlled?
DEVOTIONAL 2
Abundant Life
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came to that they may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10 ESV)
The Greek word used for life in this verse is zoe which denotes life beyond physical existence. The other word used for life in Greek is bios which implies mere physical existence. I dont think its by chance that John uses zoe in this passage. Through Christ we are brought to life beyond physical survival to a life that is shared with God Himself. In other words, there is more to this life than just existence and death. The life that Jesus brings is abundant life, life that comes through His resurrection and is bestowed on those who die to themselves and are raised to walk with Him.
What kind of life are you living? Those who have given their lives to Him are called to live a life that reflects His love and joy. How are you living the abundant life that Jesus promises today?
DEVOTIONAL 3
Practicing what you Preach
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. (James 1:22-24 ESV)
It is often assumed that those who help others can help themselves and practice what they encourage others to do. I remember one time at church an older woman made an interesting comment to me. She said, You must have a great marriage because you are a marriage counselor! Although I found this statement humorous, it does illustrate the expectation that counselors are able to put into practice what they expect others to do.
James likewise encourages followers of Christ to practice what they say they believe and live. The German theologian Bonhoeffer noted that Christians often talk too much and dont do enough action! Bonhoeffer himself was executed because he led an underground revolt against the Nazis in World War 2.
How are you practicing what you believe? How are you applying what God has taught you through others in your daily life? Be a doer of the word!
