Perinatal mental illness affects up to 1 in 5 of new and expectant mums and covers a wide range of conditions (NHS England, 2018).

The figure may be higher among women from minority ethnic groups as studies

have demonstrated lack of awareness of perinatal mental health disorder within BAME (Watson et al, 2019).

Ethnicity, culture and health beliefs does affect health seeking behaviour especially among women from minority ethnic groups.

Perinatal mental illness affects up to 20% of new and expectant mums and covers a wide range of conditions.
