Given Instructions:
A 4-5 page rhetorical analysis about the Slavery in the Thai fishing industry (- use MLA formatting )
For this essay your goal in analyzing any text is to demonstrate how a text achieves its effects (logos, ethos, and pathos), how successfully it achieves those effects, and what it means. In this analysis, you will acknowledge that rhetorical purpose and dissect the argument. You should also consider how well the author achieves the intended argument.
2. Summarization: Summarize the article. Assume that the reader has not read the article. Ensure that the entire argument is conveyed, not merely part of the argument. At the same time, provide enough detail to present a cogent articulation of the argument. However, be sure to avoid too many details. Decide what information is necessary for presenting the authors argument, without becoming tedious. The summary should not form the bulk of the essay; the summary is one small component of the essay.
3. Analysis: Critique the effectiveness of the articles argument: does it persuade? Why or why not? This judgment should be mentioned in the thesis that drives the essay. The thesis should encapsulate the analysis of the article, both the how and the how well. Consider issues of ethos, logos, and pathos in the analysis. Are these used in the article? All of them or only some? Why may the author have made these choices? The analysis should also consider the intended audience. Well educated readers? General public? Men? Women? Conservatives? Liberals? Readers of what age? What social class? The analysis should include your inference about the audience and some evidence from the source illustrating how you arrived at that inference.
Look over the piece carefully. Other issues to consider might be the length. What does that tell you about the intended audience? The word choices may also be revealing. Consider whether the article uses visuals and how those visuals are intended to speak to the audience. Be sure to look closely at such details like whether the visual is in color or black and white, at the figures included, their expressions, etc.
Other requirements:
Source Citation: Any secondary research for this assignment is not required. However, any secondary sources you use must be cited, both in the text and on the Works Cited page.
Evidence: The essay should incorporate no fewer than four quotations that are properly introduced, cited, integrated, and explained in terms of your argument. You should also paraphraseput details from the source in your own words. Use the “Quote sandwich technique” whether you are quoting or paraphrasing. You must also include a proper MLA Works Cited page for the text you analyze. Direct references from the text to prove your point are a must for a strong grade.
Visuals. Consider using visuals in some creative way. At the very least, consider the visual aspects of the article. Is there a picture/visual? If so, why? How is it being used? For what purpose? Does the visual help reach the audience or reinforce the argument? How? If there is no visual, consider the elements like titles and subheads or the use of bold/underline/italics/bullet points. Are those elements used? Why
