Assignment Task
Brittannica defines technology as “the application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life.” The goal of science is to understand how the natural world works. However, technology aids in ensuring that the necessities of a human is met. In addition to theoretical knowledge and facts, technology uses and includes scientific knowledge. Technology involves the relationship between products such as artifacts, devices, and machines and the individuals that are affected by them, makes them and uses them through different processes.
Technology has impacted almost every aspect of life today, and education is no exception. In some ways, education seems the same as it has been for many years. Technology is a powerful tool that can support and transform education in many ways, from making it easier for teachers to create instructional materials to enabling new ways for people to learn and work together. With the worldwide reach of the Internet and the ubiquity of smart devices that can connect to it, a new age of anytime anywhere education is dawning. It will be up to instructional designers and educational technologies to make the most of the opportunities provided by technology to change education so that effective and efficient education is available to everyone everywhere.
However, in many ways, technology has profoundly changed education. Firstly, technology has greatly expanded access to education. In medieval times, books were rare and only an elite few had access to educational opportunities. Individuals had to travel to centers of learning to get an education. Today, massive amounts of information, such as books, audio, images, and videos are available at one’s fingertips through the Internet, and opportunities for formal learning are available online worldwide through the Khan Academy, MOOCs, podcasts, traditional online degree programs, and more. Access to learning opportunities today is unprecedented in scope thanks to technology.
Furthermore, opportunities for communication and collaboration have also been expanded by technology. Traditionally, classrooms have been relatively isolated, and collaboration has been limited to other students in the same classroom or building. Today, technology enables forms of communication and collaboration undreamt of in the past. Students and teachers can communicate with each other beyond the classroom via different social media platforms. Some of the many technological tools used for teaching are as followed:
Zoom
Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Word
Microsoft One Note
Turnitin
Additionally, students can share what they are learning with students in other classrooms and in other states who may be enrolled in the same courses. Students can collaborate on group projects using technology-based tools such as wikis and Google docs.
Technology has also begun to change the roles of teachers and learners. because of the access to information and educational opportunity that technology has enabled. In many classrooms today the teacher’s role is shifting to the “guide on the side” as students take more responsibility for their own learning using technology to gather relevant information. Schools and universities across the world are beginning to redesign learning spaces to enable this new model of education, foster more interaction and small group work, and use technology as an enabler.
While some people may think that young children don’t need technology, it can play a positive role in a child’s learning and development. To add on, in today’s technology heavy world, learning how to use it is a necessary life skill. It’s not only the students who benefit with the use of technology though. It also provides early childhood educators with unlimited access to newer, more innovative teaching methods that allow them to facilitate an active learning environment for their young students.
Technology aids in the support of social and emotional development for children. Using touchscreen devices are the easiest for preschool age children, as their fine motor skills are still developing. When touchscreen devices are used in the correct way, they can encourage children to work together and improve their social skills by taking turns and sharing ideas as they complete online activities side by side and view educational content.
It’s not always an easy task to teach young children to listen and recall when it comes to following directions, but using digital devices in the classroom, such as tablets, computers, and smart boards, all require children to follow multi-step directions. Examples of this are turning the device on, swiping to the left or right, and selecting items on a screen. One of the main uses for technology in the classroom is teaching and reinforcing core academic skills. One simple learning activity designed for a tablet or computer can help children learn counting, numbers, letters, colors, sounds, matching shapes, etc. Not all students naturally love school and learning, but most students do enjoy using technology. This is something that early childhood educators can use to their advantage when it comes to getting all children to enjoy the learning process. Technology offers lots of fun and innovative activities that appeal to children of all ages.
Early childhood educators can use technology in a purposeful way, much like they do with other learning materials, such as art supplies, blocks, books, toys, etc. Technology allows teachers the ability to record, save, and share what they learned in class that day, or more specifically during a particular lesson. Assistive technology can also be a helpful tool in communicating with or promoting the development of children with special needs or disabilities.
During the preschool years, young children are developing a sense of initiative and creativity. They are curious about the world around them and about learning. They are exploring their ability to create and communicate using a variety of media such as crayons, felt-tip markers, paints and other art materials, blocks, dramatic play materials, miniature life figures and through creative movement, singing, dancing, and using their bodies to represent ideas and experiences. Digital technologies provide one more outlet for them to demonstrate their creativity and learning
Technology tools and interactive media allow children to freely explore touch screens loaded with a wide variety of developmentally appropriate interactive media experiences that are well designed and enhance feelings of success. They also provide opportunities for children to begin to explore and feel comfortable using “traditional” mouse and keyboard computers to use websites or look up answers with a search engine.
Creating an environment that promotes child engagement, teaches expectations and positive behavior, and gives teachers the tools they need to monitor this development with technology is one way to improving child development and future success in life.
The availability of online study materials has transformed not only how students learn in the classroom, but also the ways in which their parents can help them learn at home. Kiz Phonics is one of the many online learning programs that cater to young children.
Kiz Phonics draws a great deal of its instructional inspiration from programs like Hooked on Phonics, which was one of the first programs to emphasize phonics and phonetics in literacy education. With that being said, the program is also differentiated in several key ways. First and foremost, Kiz Phonics is developed by a 27-member panel of teachers who work daily in reading and language arts education. The program also has the support of several tenured professors of language from around the country.
The Kiz Phonics program, unlike Hooked on Phonics, is available entirely online or through mobile applications. Because the program was developed by people who teach English or ESL to young and adult learners, heavy emphasis is placed on the proper progression through fundamentals, like the alphabet, phonics, pronunciation, sentence structure, and reading techniques. Digital letter, word, and pronunciation charts are also available online and can be printed, making this a great instructional tool for a homeschooling environment as well. Kiz Phonics provides a wide range of tools for students such as worksheets, games, lesson videos to teach phonemes, listening materials, flashcards, handwriting worksheets, and much more.
The walls of the classrooms are no longer a barrier as technology enables new ways of learning, communicating, and working collaboratively.
The COVID-19 has resulted in schools shut down across the world. Globally, over 1.2 billion children are out of the classroom. As a result, education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms.
With this sudden shift away from the classroom in many parts of the globe, some are wondering whether the adoption of online learning will continue to persist post-pandemic, and how such a shift would impact the worldwide education market.
There are, however, challenges to overcome. Some students without reliable internet access and/or technology struggle to participate in digital learning; this gap is seen across countries and between income brackets within countries.
Mrs. Linda Pascal, a third-grade teacher at E.P. Roberts Primary School mentions the following about Technology and Education. She states that, “in The Bahamas we face more of a unique challenge because of the lack of technological advancements within our educational system and The Bahamas at large. Technology will play a vital role in education throughout the pandemic. However, because of the lack of technological advancements, effective teaching will be hampered. Everyone needs a device. Everyone needs a viable internet source. But because technology is not of utmost importance other than for WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, it will be a strain on teachers, parents, and students alike. However, there are some persons in the field of Education who deem it as important and are trying their utmost best to ensure that there is a platform where education and learning can still take place. During the initial stage of the pandemic those group of educators were able to have a system up and running within a week. It was so easy to use, that other countries utilized the platform as well. Now they are working day in and day out to have a system that is more accessible and easier to use. With everything new it takes time to learn and that can be a struggle especially for educators who arent willing to try. Obtaining a device for EVERY child is also a huge setback. The government can only do so much so it will take regular Bahamians to assist wherever they can. All in all, there are some ups and downs but its a work in progress.”
Technology will forever be a part of our world, and as time goes on, it will be more and more a part of our educational system. The government and community at large must ensure that each student has the necessary access to technologies so that they can have the best online experience yet. Institutions in The Bahamas such as Urban Renewal have started to assist students who may not be able to participate in online learning. They give students the space, internet access and devices to learn. It is my desire that way more establishments show the same support in the educational system.
