Prior to beginning work on this learning activity, read Chapters 5 and 8 of your Effective practices in early childhood education. You are also advised to review the interactive learning activity (Links to an external site.) in the recommended resources.
As an early childhood education leader, you must have a solid commitment to supporting social justice, leading with high quality effective leadership skills, and innovative 21st-century learning practices.
To prepare for this journal,
Select a scenario from the three listed below.Consider using the recommended interactivity (Links to an external site.) to outline or draft your response.
In your journal,
Identify and summarize your selected scenario.
Describe the leadership decision you would make.Be sure to share ideas on how you might support families through the challenges and opportunities that you perceive as a leader in your selected scenario.
Support your decision with NAEYC Practices discussed in the text as well as themes you have seen throughout the MAECEL program and your weekly discussions and assignments.Scenario 1During a community event at a local park a government stakeholder approaches you and applauds the development and growth of your high-quality early childhood program. She asks you if you can lower tuition for all children from a certain area of town and raise tuition for those in a higher economic demographic area so all children can attend your program. She then also asks you to consider hiring local members from the community, even if they are not credentialed because it helps the local economy from a certain area of town that needs restoration.
Scenario 2One family from your program requests a meeting with you and their son’s preschool teacher. During this meeting, the family expresses great concern with the set-up of the classroom that their child attends. The parents express that the son was seen during pick up on several occasions dressed in girls’ clothing using the dramatic play kitchen area. The family states they do not want their son dressed up in a “girl’s apron” and do not want him in roles that women should be doing. They suggest the teacher not allow boys to play dress up in the dramatic play and state she should discuss this with the entire class.Scenario 3During a training for all your early childhood education staff members on how to use developmentally appropriate technology in the early childhood education environment, you overhear one of your veteran preschool teachers saying the training was a waste of time because the children in your program were too poor to have access to technology, so it was a waste of time to use it in school. She proceeded to say that children needed to just go back to playing outside like they did before.
