Assignment Guidance The UK government has set in law a target to bring all its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. Currently the UK housing stock accounts for 14% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. (Committee for Climate Change, 2019).
Task 1: Passivhaus A new build Passivhaus home can cut energy use by 90%.
(a) Explain what is meant by ‘Passivhaus
(b) Produce three hand drawn details of a Passivhaus home:-
i. Foundation,
ii. Window showing the head and cill,
iii. Roof eaves detail. These should be drawn at scale 1:10 on a drawing sheet with a title block.
(c) Identify and analyse the difference between a Passivhaus certified house and the 1980s house in Task 2.
Task 2: Retrofitting existing homes 29 million existing homes across the UK must be made low carbon, low-energy and resilient to a changing climate. (Committee for Climate Change, 2019) Fig 1. 1980s detached house To understand the scale of this challenge:-
(a) Identify the U values that were required for the main elements by the Building Regulations 1985.
(b) What are the worst acceptable fabric performance values allowed under today’s Building Regulations?
(c) Explain the various measures that can be implemented to help this home become low-carbon and ultra-efficient as well as adapted to flooding, heat and water scarcity.
