TMA Submission

It is strongly recommended that you make an early submission to check the originality report and, if necessary, make amendments to your document for resubmission. Back up your TMA at all times. Once you have uploaded your TMA (in Word document format only), retain the Turnitin digital receipt as evidence of a successful submission. View your submission to ensure that the entire document has been uploaded successfully.

Reminder: When you submit your TMA, please follow the instructions in Canvas and label your file correctly (your name must be in the filename) so that your instructors can upload your essay properly after marking the assignments.

Plagiarism and Collusion

The assignment is to be completed on your own. You may discuss the TMA with your coursemates; however, the assignment must be written independently. Do not share your notes, draft, or final TMA with anyone before the marked TMAs are returned to you.

Avoid plagiarism by giving yourself sufficient time to research and understand the material so that you can write up your assignment in your own words. Quotations should be used sparingly. Simply citing the source of ‘copied’ chunks of text does not excuse it from plagiarism. Do ensure that any
paraphrasing is done appropriately, even if you use text from your own work that you have submitted as part of another assignment for the same or another course.

The University takes a very serious view of plagiarism (passing off someone else’s ideas as your own, or recycling of contents from your own earlier marked TMA from the same course or another course) and collusion (submitting an assignment which is the same or very similar to another student’s). penalties for plagiarism or collusion. You are strongly advised to submit your TMA early, check the plagiarism report yourself, and if needed revise and resubmit your TMA before the submission deadline.

TUTOR-MARKED ASSIGNMENT 01 (TMA01)

This assignment is worth 20% of the final mark for ELT201 Understanding Poetry.

The cut-off date for this assignment is Tuesday, 9 September 2025, 11.55pm.

Question

Critically analyse the poem found on pages 6-7 of this TMA booklet, paying close attention to the voice and language found within it. You may also consider other aspects of the poem which are significant.
Your essay should:

  • Identify the voice in the poem, examine its character, and show how it functions in the
    poem.
  • Discuss how the language (diction and syntax) shapes the voice, tone, and attitude we hear, and contributes to the style and meaning of the poem.

Your response should be a well-structured academic essay that keeps to the word limit of 1,000 words.

Student Notes

1. Carefully read the poems and the relevant sections in your Study Guide and anthology: SU2 Voice and Language, “Speaker, Listener, and Context” (Gwynn 2-9) and “The Language of Poetry” (Gwynn 11-18).

2. This is not a research paper and consultation of secondary sources beyond the course materialsis not recommended. However, if you do use them, you must record all references meticulously. (Note: the heavy penalty for plagiarism.)

3. On the requirements of the question: Voice: Consider the speaker, listener, and context when you assess the voice in the poem. Is this a first-person speaker, a persona, or a narrator? Relate the voice to its associated poetic genre (see Study Guide, Section 1.1.4). Describe the tone of voice. Do you detect irony in the voice? And, if so, where and what is its significance?

Language: Assess the type and level of diction used (see Study Guide, Section 2.1 Diction), the choice of words, and their associative meanings. Consider the questions listed at the end of Section 2.1: “How does the language characterize the voice? Does it depict values, attitudes, mood, and disposition?” (SU2-15).

Meaning: You need to arrive at an overall argument as to what the poem is about through your analysis and interpretation of the lines. This includes the central theme of the poem or any overall message or idea/s which the speaker is trying to communicate through then poem.

4. Write properly structured essays, with clear thesis statements, relevant supporting evidence, and conclusions. Give a suitable title to your essay. Your introductory paragraph should present a clear thesis and topic sentence—one that indicates the argument you intend to make. Check that each paragraph presents one main idea that develops your argument. Support your claims with textual evidence and ensure that all requirements of the question are addressed.

Adopt the latest MLA style and format, both in the main body of the paper and in the Works Cited.

5. Your essay should be close to the given word limit of 1,000 words. The word limit is to be strictly observed. Words exceeding the limit will not be marked.
