Question:
The Task
You have been employed by St Edmunds College as an electrical engineer. The principal of the College has expressed concern over the use of mobile phones in classes and would like you to advise him on the purchase or construction of a simple electronic device which could prevent students from using mobile phones to access network services during school hours.
Your device must not interfere with the school IT network or other connected devices. Nor should it effect devices outside of school buildings.
Your report requires:
- A brief description of the nature of mobile phone technology. Including identification of the frequency and bandwidth of the waves used to communicate with local base stations.
- The location of local base stations
- An explanation of your device, its electronic design and how it works.
- An assessment of the legal implications of such a device
- Comment on any possible other solutions based on physics that you are aware of, which could be employed to provide a similar effect.
- An evaluation of the effectiveness of your suggested solution.

Drafts
All students have the right to receive oral feedback on one draft of an assessment item. Students who present drafts for feedback less than seven days prior to the due date forfeit their right to receive it. Feedback on drafts presented less than one week before the due date will be at the discretion of his current class teacher. A second draft may not be presented for feedback. Teachers will not edit drafts. It is the responsibility of the student to attend to grammatical errors, punctuation, typing mistakes and spelling.
