Task Instructions
PART A
Job Applicant Shortlisting Simulation for Gower City Council
• Part A requires you to devote most of your preparation time to assessing the 30 job applications and collaborating on the shortlisting decisions.
• Part A cannot be completed without engaging in a collaborative, group decisionmaking process.
• Marking of Part A will be individually assessed.
• Students are encouraged to form their own groups (of about 3 members per group) before week 5 of the trimester. Once you have your group, it is up to group members to 1. List your group members’ names on the Group List (available by hyperlink in the assessment 3 section of the assessment tab) and 2. arrange a convenient meeting time(s).
• Individuals whose names do not appear on the Group List will be assumed to not have a group and will be assigned by a group by the course leader around week 6 of the trimester. We will aim to allocate 3 students per group, depending on enrolment numbers. Students will be notified of their groups by a post on the assessment 3 Forum. It is up to groups formed by the Course Leader to then arrange a convenient meeting time(s).
• Topic 10: Collaborative Process for HR, provides essential advice and scaffolding for this collaborative activity. Refer to the ‘Assessment Focus’ section on each page of the Topic 10 Study Book.
Steps to complete PART A’s Collaborative Element
1. Access the ‘Link to Gower City Council Portal’ on the Assessment Tab. This portal houses information about Gower City Council, the job description for the position you will be shortlisting for, and the 30 job applications which you are to assess for their suitability for the identified position.
2. Download and safely save to your computer, the ‘Applicant Ranking Sheet’.
3. Students must individually complete their own Applicant Ranking Sheet.
4. This ‘Applicant Ranking Sheet’ takes you through a series of steps that will guide you the shortlisting exercise, essentially:
- Step 1. Working on your own first assess, rate and rank the applicants against the job requirements, recording your ratings and notes on the Applicant Ranking Sheet.
- Step 2a. List a maximum of 10 of the most suitable applicants.
- Step 2b. Collaborate with your assigned group of students, i.e., your ‘selection panel’ to determine a final shortlist of applicants suitable for progressing to the next stage of selection (of up to 6 applicants). The Applicant Ranking Sheet has provision for you to record your own notes during/after this collaboration.
- Step 2c. Document the names of the panel’s final list of shortlist applicants (up to 6 applicants) in the space provided on the Applicant Ranking Sheet and make brief notes in the space provided to account for the decisions.
5. You are now finished the group/collaborative element of PART A, and your completed Applicant Ranking Sheet forms part of your final assignment submission.
