Paper Length: 4-5 pages, double-spaced, with one inch margins.
The Assignment:
Creative writing often incorporates research, sometimes in ways that the reader does not notice. The goal of this assignment is to explore the various ways authors may use research to support, illustrate, and explain the ideas and or purposes of their writing. Writing in a creative manner, while incorporating research is the focus of this assignment.
Our theme is Hidden History. You will select a person, event, invention, or phenomenon that has happened in our past (ancient or modern) that has largely gone under the radar or under-appreciated. You will narrate your findings to uncover their/its story with research. You will walk us through why you selected piece of evidence, what drew you to make conclusions, how your research ultimately shapes your thought process toward answering your question.
Through your research you will then craft an essay that still works in one, several, or all of the modes of creative writing craft (detail, location, tense) we have been studying in this course, yet is infused with the findings of your research. In this essay you are being asking to incorporate your research findings in a variety of ways, quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, and incorporating visual aids.
You will write in the style of “narrative research,” which is asking you to explore your topic from within. You will research through experience (i.e. conducting interviews, creating polls/surveys, diving deep into the happenings of your community, observing the world around you). This assignment is not necessarily asking the author to craft an argument or to persuade readers on a particular issue. Rather, it is asking the author to write creatively, delve into a research area, and then present the research while maintaining a creative voice in the writing.
The Objective:
Much of the research that we engage with in the academic community presents findings in a standard way, using academic tone, language, structure, etc. Engaging with research in a way that incorporates creative writing allows the author to connect with their audience in new ways and form personal connections between the author and the research. A creative approach also allows the reader entry into what might otherwise be considered an inaccessible topic for the reader/author. This new accessibility allows the author and audience to understand the implications and applications of this research in new ways.
The freedom to engage in creative writing can often help us discover elements of our writing style such as tone, voice, structure, that may then be applied to our academic writing to create a text that is more engaging and effective.
