For this midterm exam you will be assigned one of several possible scenes in Dominique Morriseau’s Pipeline.

Identify the Scene number you are writing on, then identify the central action of your scene, and the character that takes this action.
Detail your character’s main objective, and how their action helped them work towards that objective.
Explain how the character’s objective and action relate back to the play’s intrusion.
Then, trace out how this central action relates sequentially to a central action that occurred in the previous scene (IE what was the trigger for your scene)?
Finally, explain how does this central action produces or triggers a major action in the next scene.
In the second paragraph:

Describe one element of the mise-en-scene in your assigned scene. You have a tremendous amount of latitude here. You may focus on a costuming choice, a gestural or physical choice an actor made (what the actor did with his/her body on stage), how the actors were arranged on or moved about the stage (the “blocking”), how the props impacted the scene, how the lighting impacted the scene, how the set changed, etc. etc. etc. Whatever you choose to describe, you must describe this element in detail.
Articulate how this element of mise-en-scene animates the action and meaning of the scene. Explicate how this mise-en-scene gives the play meaning that exceeds the meaning provided by the script alone.
In the third paragraph:

Reflect on what you learned about Pipeline by seeing/watching vs. reading the play. What about the play became clear or stood out to you after witnessing the live production? What big take aways did the live performance leave you with that you would not have gleamed from the script alone?

How did the scenery and costume elements help to make the production either more effective or not and why?

The reaction paper will be on the film version of the play Fences by August Wilson starring and directed by Denzel Washington. This is a for credit assignment. However, letter grade deductions will occur if it is turned in late, is shorter than the minimum length requirement or the elements of the handout Enjoy the Play (attached) are not followed. The paper should be 2-3 pages, 12 Times New Roman and double spaced.

You must view the film and takes notes in order to complete this project. You will more than likely need to rent it online, Amazon Prime or Amazon is recommended but you may also use a different site if you so chose.

Writing a Theatre Reaction Paper

You are enrolled in a Theatre course; and you are required to write a theatre reaction paper. The following guidelines are designed to structure the elements and the development of your paper. Your paper should include the name of the play and playwright. Additionally, you should identify the director, as well as the principal members of the cast. At the beginning of the paper, identify the general type of play that you are reacting to as well. This is not so much a formal designation of the play’s genre but rather an in-your-own words description.
At this point you will want to give a very brief synopsis of the play. Identify the main characters and the main story line, going into as little detail as necessary for your reader to get the gist of the play. This synopsis introduces the major characters and basic dramatic issues. It is not an attempt to show how the major conflicts are resolved or to retell the entire story.
In the next portion of the paper, you will move into more of your “strictly personal responses” to the play, production and performances. This portion is the bulk of your paper. Refer to the “bullet points” below. You must respond to all of the bullet points.

About the play:
• What is the play really about in your opinion?
• What character(s) did you like and why? Which one(s) did you not like and why?
• What life issue(s) did the play address that relates to your own life and how so?
• What was the most emotionally moving scene(s) for you and why?
• What was the funniest scene(s) for you and why?

About the production and performances:
• Did the acting/actors overall seem believable or not and why? Who was your favorite actor(s) and why? Who was your least favorite actor(s) and why?
• How did the scenery and costume elements help to make the production either more effective or not and why?
• How did the lighting and the sound/music elements help to make the production either more effective or not and why?

You are tasked with creating a portfolio featuring elements from Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein. Choose one task from each category to complete for your Frankenstein portfolio. All four of the assignments must on one Word Document and submitted together.

Visual

Create a detailed page from Victor’s lab journal. Include doodles, random thoughts, plans, etc.
Draw a large, detailed picture of the creature based precisely on the description in the novel. (That means no green monsters with bolts in their necks.)
Find a world map and label all the areas where the action takes place in the novel. Draw lines that indicate the directions of movement. Include some explanatory labels on the map.
Make a detailed collage that contains pictures and words relating to ideas and events from the novel.
Creative Writing

Write a one-page (typed and double-spaced) diary entry from Victor’s point of view immediately following the Creature’s “birth.”
Create a one-page (double-spaced) do-it-yourself manual on how to create your own Creature, based specifically on the descriptions of Victor’s work.
Write lyrics to a complete song about Frankenstein. This could be an original rap or song, or you can take an existing tune and write new lyrics (Weird Al-style). You can use humor here.
Real World Connection

Choose five songs that relate to ideas or themes in the novel. Include the lyrics for each song and explain the reasoning for why you chose each song.
Find a newspaper or magazine article about a current bioethical issue. Print it out and on a separate sheet of paper, have each group member explain his or her views about the issue in a few sentences. Identify what connects this issue to Frankenstein.
Write a one-page (typed and double-spaced) explanation about how we live in a Frankenstein-like culture when it comes to altering ourselves to be more “superhuman” or “ideal,” and the positive and negative consequences that are associated with it. You can use personal and/or celebrity examples.
List

Make a list of ten questions that you would ask one of the characters. These need to be related to the novel.
List five merits of Victor and five “sins” or negative attributes that we could associate with him.
List ten instances of the gothic atmosphere that appear in the novel.
List ten emotions that appear in the novel and briefly explain the events they connect with

November 12, 2020/in Theatre /by Eunice
Type and double-space your responses to the questions below in MS Word or another word-processing program.
ESSAY QUESTIONS (Required)
Please respond using essay-question format. You do not need to turn this in to a full-blown essay with an introduction and conclusion. Instead use the numbering below and answer each question fully and thoughtfully. Just state the name of the play and where and when you saw it in your opening response. Make sure to correctly name the artists involved for the parts you are analyzing and distinguish between the performer(s) and character(s). You can find all that information in your program, so make sure to keep that handy! For all your responses, support each point with concrete details that you observed from the live performance.

1) Discuss the work of ONE performer that stood out to you. Clearly state both the performer name and the name(s) of the character(s) he or she played. Incorporate terminology and concepts from Topic 12/Chapter 4: The Art of the Actor in your response. (250-300 words; 30pts)

Describe in detail one particular moment that stood out in the play, and talk about the situation of the character in that moment. What was happening for that character? What did s/he want? What got in the way?
Now think about actor/performer choices: physical and vocal choices; believability; presence/energy; rapport with audience and/or other performers. How did the performer’s choices contribute to your experience of the moment?
Overall: What happened? How did you respond viscerally (in your gut)? What did you think about? How, if at all, did you care? How did other audience members respond? Be specific!
2) Describe in concrete detail one other moment of the play that stood out to you. Now think about the other elements (other than acting) that contributed Analyze HOW the production used at least TWO of the following elements to convey story and idea and evoke a response from the audience. Incorporate in your response terminology and concepts from Chapter 5: The Director and Chapter 6: The Designers and their associated topics. (250-300 words; 30pts)

Directing: casting, creating metaphors, stage pictures/movement (blocking, entrances and exits), rhythm and pacing, focus
Choreography: Dance/Movement in addition to the general stage movement (blocking and entrances and exits)
Design: (Spectacle: All that we see: lighting design, Set Design, Properties (objects) Design, Costume Design). Use terminology from the Elements and Principles of design in the Design topic module to support your points.
Music (all that we hear) – singing, orchestration, rhythms of speech– sound and silence
3) BONUS QUESTION (Optional) (10pts) Think about the event as a whole. What overall was the work trying to do? How successfully did it do that? Was it worth doing? Why or why not? Analyze the overall purpose of the event in terms of TWO of potential Functions of Theatre and Performance in the following list:

To enlighten/teach

To foster community

To delight the senses (visually/aurally)

To arouse emotion

To ask questions

To challenge our worldview (may even make us uncomfortable)

To encourage reflection about difficult issues

To inspire personal and/or societal change

To evoke admiration for the performers’ skills

To reflect our experiences

To evoke a visceral (physical) response

As always, support your statements with concrete, detailed examples from the event. Persuade your readers to agree with you! (100-200 words; BONUS)
