The essay should focus on how Britain viewed war and militarism prior to 1915, especially in relation to how this militarism affected the breakout of the first world war and the overall supportive reaction of the British public.
Topics/themes to cover can be how war was depicted in fiction, the boy scouts and officer training corps and their effect on mobilization, volunteerism in the early stages of the war, academic views (vorticists/pacifists ects) on war and militarism although im willing to give the writer freedom to pursue whatever theme or topic they want as long as it relates to the question and is of historical accuracy. I’ve attached a word that contains some of my own preliminary and disjointed writing on several topics related to the question. There is no obligation to use the work although I think the section of war fiction could useful.
As for sources a mixture of academic secondary sources and historical primary sources should be used to write the essay. Three sources that id like to be included as they are seen to be essential by markers can be found on the second word document linked although I’m hoping the writer will be able find and access these books themselves. I may be able to provide access to them if it is needed.
Ill also leave below the marking criteria for the essay in case you’d need it although it is fairly general criteria:
Relevance of the response to the question
Depth of written analysis
Clarity of written thought and expression
Coherence and structure of argument
Range and relevance of evidence
Range and relevance of historical context
Knowledge of appropriate historiography
Competency in referencing and bibliography
