Class, you are here in Week Five, and we have another interesting discussion this week!
Last week, we saw Guy Kawasaki’s TED talk on Enchantment. In one area of his talk, he covered some great tips on effectively using presentations. This week, we’ll look at another presentation, this time by Vanessa Van Edwards. Have you ever wondered why some TED talks go viral? Or why do some seem to be better than others? Are communication signals contagious? Vanessa Van Edwards reveals some fascinating insights in this area. Take note of how she describes the use of hands and gestures we use as conversation starters (and killers). Think about some hints offered the next time you engage with others. After the video and during this week, I’d really like each of you to incorporate some of her ideas into your daily life and see if there are any changes. These can be practical exercises in Human Relations.
Questions to answer in this week’s discussion.
1. What was the most enlightening part of the talk? What stood out to you?
2. Have you ever done any conversation killers she discussed?
3. What specific actions would you take to utilize some of her recommendations?
4. What were some of your observations if you changed anything about yourself this week based on her talk?

The travel and tourism industry is a vital component of the global economy. For many regions and countries, tourism is their main source of revenue. There are many different industry organizations that will advocate for legislation to benefit the tourism industry. Much like the National Restaurant Association, and the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the chosen organization should feature some key issues and legislative interests on their website.
Find a tourism organization that advocates for its members, it can be a local, national or global organization, and identify a key issue the organization is concerned about currently. Post a link to the page you found and summarize the issue, what the organization is advocating for, and what impact the issue could have on the tourism industry.

For this purpose of this week’s Discussion, we will assume that students in this course may be interested in psychology-related careers. However, the majority of these fields prefer graduate degree holders. There are opportunities for Bachelor’s level degree holders, but the number of opportunities with a career in psychology expand greatly for those with graduate degrees.
Research three different graduate programs in psychology. Compare and contrast each program. Consider the following questions while doing so.
What information are applicants to graduate programs in psychology required to provide (e.g., academic information, standardized testing, recommendations, personal information, etc…)? What are the costs for graduate programs? What types of financial aid are available? What are other options (e.g., merit fellowships, assistantships, outside employment)? How much debt do graduate students generally take on and does that vary based on degree (masters vs. doctoral) or program (e.g., Ph.D. vs. Psy.D.)? How important is it to graduate from an accredited program/university?
