How well do art, theater, and Disney communicate history? While the scenes painted may be inspiring and patriotic, do they need to also be historically accurate? Reflect on such contemporary pieces as the play Hamilton and the painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware (Links to an external site.) by Emanuel Leutze and explain the advantages or disadvantages of such portrayals.INTRO: Introductory Remarks: Art and History can be a difficult (even controversial) topic for a historian. But it is such an important issue, and learning how to understand the role of images, place of art and theater, is critical to our political life. We come across this dilemma more than we realize. Just in the last discussion, the place of Paul Revere’s engraving of the Boston “Incident” may have changed the course of history and fueled the fires in relations between the British and Americans. The purpose of the art is important, and whether or not the author claims to be accurate. Some genres or subjects should be more accurate, while others are allowed more leeway. Images of the past and their messages can be powerful. They undoubtedly shape our views and our experiences. The use of images and history for art can be double-sided. For instance, Disney might use a sense of patriotism and comfort to calm the tourists, “Main Street” USA, Frontier islands, etc., but the story-telling might also awaken a curiosity to visit a historical site, perhaps after seeing a movie about Daniel Boone. Still, it is important to keep what’s creative and what’s history separate. Hi – just need a good couple paragraphs for a discussion post Thank You!
