ICT352 ICT Project Management : Manage the E-Commerce Business

Task:

Case Study: EcoAusFare

The 2019-2020 bushfire season in Australia was particularly intense. Widespread damage impacted many people and businesses. Penny Wilson lost both her home and her business. She was grateful of the volunteers who helped her in the aftermath of the fires. August Starc was one of those volunteers and he and his partner,
April, spent many hours talking to Penny about the future. The conversations started an idea from which a
new business venture has grown.
In September 2020, EcoAusFare was launched as an online business selling products from Australian designed brands. EAF instigated three simple rules for including a product in their range. Products must:
• Embrace conscientious consumerism,
• Be sourced from independent designers, and
• Be designed and made in Australia.
Sustainability is at the very heart of the strategy of EAF. For example, all textile items, including clothing soft furnishings, must be made from bamboo, cotton, linen, silk or wool which has been grown in an ecologically sustainable way. EAF require that their suppliers minimise waste and therefore the use of deadstock fabric is expected. The range of products include:
• lifestyle products such as cookery or gardening kits,
• homeware including eco-living items such as stainless-steel straws and bamboo pegs,
• clothing for adults and children, and
• baby and toddler clothes and necessities.
Importantly, plastic-free solutions are paramount. Therefore, their eco-home range provides solutions that
avoid single-use plastic.
The mission of EAF is twofold. Firstly, it is to enable customers to support small, independent and local designers and producers who craft eco-friendly Australian products. Secondly, it is to provide a platform for
those small businesses so that they may reach a wide audience and ensure their sustainability.
The mission of EAF is entwined in sustainability where the needs of the present must not compromise the
ability of future generations to provide for their needs. They want to ensure that they are known for their
ecological credentials.
Feedback from their customers and from their suppliers has been very positive. In the space of a year their
business has expanded dramatically. They are now struggling to manage the e-Commerce business from the
office space in which it started.
Now based in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, EAF have recognised that they need to have a 500
ATMC ICT352 ICT Project Management Task 1 square metre purpose-built store/workshop with office space. However, they are determined to ensure that this new building will be built to the highest eco-friendly specifications so that its eco-footprint is minimised.
Neither Penny, August nor April have a good understanding of the requirements of eco-friendly building
processes, therefore they need help in understanding the stakeholders and the process that will be involved
in this project.
Penny, August and April are aware that to ensure the quality of service that they currently provide, they will
need to employ more staff. They are concerned that every new member of staff should be very aware of the
sustainability strategy of EAF. Therefore, they have decided that it may be beneficial to have an interactive dashboard. They would like the dashboard to detail appropriate real-time statistics that visualise how EAF is
performing in terms of the Sustainable Development Goals (https://sdgs.un.org/goals). In particular, the dashboard must align with Goal 12, Responsible Consumption and Production. Penny, August and April
believe that having the information readily available will inspire all staff to uphold the EAF business vision.
