Instructions
1. Present an example of “post-internet” art.
Many different artists have tangled with the internet in their work, and particularly with social media — from Instagram’s censorship of Dread Scott’s work to Richard Prince’s exhibition of other people’s Instagram photos.
Pick a work of art by a nationally-recognized artist that’s tangled up with the internet in some way. Be sure the artist is nationally known. There are a million people posting their artworks online, so we need to narrow it down to artists who have well-developed concepts for their work. Try Googling “post internet artist”!
Note that the artwork may not directly involve the internet as a medium.
Identify the work fully, and include an image or a link to the work.
2. Explain how the work represents a post-internet approach.
Start with information about the artist’s background and interests.
Then, address how the medium (materials and their use) of the work you picked speaks to the internet’s impact (good and/or bad).
How does the imagery (what you see) speak to the internet’s impact?
Note if the artist treads close to an ethical line, exposing others to potential peril (psychological or physical).
Use at least two different sources for this part, and put the link to each source right after you borrow from it. If you use a website’s words, put those phrases or sentences in “quotation marks” and then put the link in parentheses after the quote.
3. What do you see as the future of art in the internet age?
Please address any of these questions:
Why would you, or why would you not, choose to participate in an online performance like Wafaa Bilal’s Domestic Tension, as a viewer / voyeur/ mouse clicker? (Note that, if you choose not to participate, that means you can’t help aim the gun at the wall and protect him.)
What role would you like to see social media (and the internet more broadly) in sharing artwork, and what problems do you see in this practice?
What role would you like to see social media (and the internet more broadly) in selling artwork, and what problems do you see in this practice??
What role would you like to see social media (and the internet more broadly) in critiquing artwork, and what problems do you see in this practice??
