Determinants and Strategies for Addressing a Public Health Problem
Assignment Three: Strategies
OVERVIEW
In this assignment, you will build on your determinants analysis. Your task is to identify and critique interventions that have been used (or are being used) to ameliorate the problem or similar problems. The 4-level social ecological model (SEM) offers a framework for program planners to determine how to focus activities and address cross cutting themes.
Step ONE: Identify potentially useful interventions
Find and cite eight prevention activities that have been used to address the problem. You will choose interventions based on their relevance to your population and evidence demonstrating effectiveness and limitations. (In other words, peer-reviewed journals and evaluation reports in the gray literature will be the best place to find interventions.)
Step TWO: Compile a document with the following sections.
A. Brief introduction (≈ 1 paragraph – 10 points)
Describe the public health problem and your specific population succinctly and clearly state the purpose of this assignment. This can be a revised version of introductions to Assignments 1 and 2.
B. Intervention tables (≈ ½ page per table – 60 points)
Based on supporting evidence, map interventions to specific determinants at each level of the 4-level SEM, by:
• Identifying the determinants or factors that contribute to your health problem at each level of the SEM;
• Describing 2 existing interventions that address these determinants for each level;
• Analyzing the strengths and limitations of each intervention; and
• Commenting on how the existing interventions could be improved by using theories or approaches we have covered in the course. ….
Individual-level theories and approaches
● Health Belief Model
● Theory of Planned Behavior
● Protection Motivation Theory
Interpersonal- and community-level approaches and theories
● Social cognitive theory
Identify the theory and how implementation of a specific construct could be used to improve the intervention
For the tables only, you may use a smaller font size than the rest of the paper.

C. Analysis and Conclusion (≈ 2-4 paragraphs – 20 points)
Which intervention and level would you choose as a starting point?. Chances are that there may be a need to intervene at multiple levels, depending on the health problem to be addressed and the context. However, in public health resources are limited, hence the need to prioritize. This is your place to think creatively about your ideal intervention and explain why you would choose this level to start.
Here are some points you can include in your analysis, but you are not limited to these questions:
• Where would you start and why? In other words, which determinant, what intervention, what level, why?
• What theory would you use to guide your planning or which pieces of different theories?
• Who will you need buy-in from? What resources will you need to start well?
• Which challenges do you anticipate while implementing the proposed intervention?
Write a brief and succinct summary of what you have done in the paper for the conclusion.
D. References (not included in page limit – 5 points)
Please follow APA or AMA Style Guide formats for your References list and for the in-text citations you use throughout the paper. PurdueOwl is a great resource for clear guidance on In-Text Citations and References.
Appropriate Sources to Include in the Assignment:
• Primary, peer-reviewed research studies from scientific journals;
• Local, state, national government-sponsored websites (e.g., CDC, NIH, PEPFAR, Boston Public Health Commission);
• Some NGO websites (e.g., Planned Parenthood International, FHI 360, Amnesty International);
• WHO and United Nations agencies (e.g., UNICEF, UNHCR, UNAIDS), online research databases and repositories (e.g., International Health Metrics and Evaluation, Framingham Heart Study, ACES Too High, Demographic Health Surveys).
Overall Writing Quality (5 points)
