Design Requirements
a) Provide the client with two distinct floor options for the building; one option should be based on a concrete frame solution, the other based on a steel frame solution. Use hand sketches to show the layout and how loads would be transferred to the columns. Also indicate how lateral stability can be achieved (no calculations necessary)(formative)
b) From part a) appraise each option and identify the solution you recommend, giving reasons for your choices. (10 marks)
c) For your chosen solution, complete a load take-down to determine column loads and forces in floor beams. Using this, produce preliminary sizing calculations for a primary beam, secondary beam (where applicable) and column. Calculations should be a maximum of 10 pages. The ULS partial factors of safety for dead and imposed loads are 1.35 and 1.5 respectively. (15 marks)
d) Using appropriate engineering scales, produce one or two A3 drawings for your chosen scheme that includes a typical floor plan, section, elevation and any important details.(15 marks)
e) Briefly describe the method of construction that could be used to build your design solution, indicating key information for the Contractor Explain choice of concentration time and return period, and calculate peak design rainfall. For option 1 use drawings to show which parts of the carpark drain into which gullies (you do not need to design the gullies), calculate the relevant areas and flow rates. For option 2 use drawings to how which parts of the carpark drain into which swales, calculate the relevant areas and flow rates.
Give details of the swale design and check the peak flow in the swales. Show how the swales drain into the pipe network (again details of any inlets, gullies, etc. are not required).
