Mary Is a 35-year-old Single Parent – Case Study

Assignment Task

Part A

1. You have just started work as a family support worker with parents who have mental health issues. What key legislation/standards/codes determine your practice?

Case Study

Read the following case study and answer the questions that follow:

Mary is a 35-year-old single parent with a history of mental health and drug misuse issues. Her children were removed from her care 18 months ago. Mary has worked

hard with your service to stop using drugs, and address her mental health issues, and she has a lot of trust in you. The children were returned to Mary’s care a month ago, on condition she did not use alcohol or other drugs.

The children are delighted to be with their mother, and have said that they never want to be in care again. This morning you turn up to see how things are going. The eldest child meets you at the door and tells you that Mary had a birthday party last night, and “Mum got drunk”. Mary comes to the door and begs you not tell Community Services: “it was a one-off and I’ll never do it again”.

2. What is the ethical dilemma in this situation?

3. What are your options in responding to this situation?

4. What are the possible consequences of each option?

5. How might you determine the best course of action?

Part B

Case Study

Read the following case study and answer the questions that follow:

You work in a supported housing service for young women (aged 16-25) with mental health issues. Jaycee is a 16-year-old woman who is new to the shared household. During a meeting with Jaycee, she tells you that at birth she was identified as male, but as she grew up she realised that she was female. Her parents were unable to cope and so she left home at 14, and lived on the streets until she moved in to this service. She has been buying illicit hormones to help her transition and prevent any masculine hair growth. Jaycee asks you to help her find a doctor who can prescribe her with legal hormones. There isn’t any policy on transgender people living at the service, and there is nothing in the referrals list for transgender people either.

1. Identify your state or territory’s relevant legislation for this situation, and briefly note what it means for your service in this scenario.

2. Identify two (2) potential work practice improvements for the service.

3. How would you take action towards making these improvements?
