You will choose the following topic:
- MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) for Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario.
You will explore current issues in Kitchener/Waterloo Region, Ontario for local community policy, practices, and/or health care services that enhance care of the older adult and their family.
Rationale:
The assignment is an opportunity to show that you can:
- Examine gaps, barriers, and fragmentation in the health care system based upon evaluation and research findings to suggest improvements for older adults and their families.
- Propose methods to coordinate and integrate care providers, community organizations, policy makers and the public to meet the needs of a growing aging population.
- Appraise the impact of changing locales, populations, scientific and technological developments, and emerging societal trends on provision of services to older adults.
- Promote sustainable changes in care delivery and practice to improve the quality of nursing services by evaluating the effectiveness of practice in achieving intended outcomes for older adults.
Directions:
You will develop and present a 10-minute oral presentation.
RESEARCH THIS COMMUNITY HEALTH ISSUE AND INCLUDE INFORMATION ON THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:
- Relevant demographics
- Scope of the issue
- Historic trends
- Current political, legal, and ethical factors influencing the issue.
- Resources of the health care system currently devoted to this issue.
- Possible future planning
- Discussion of professional nursing roles and interventions relevant to the community health nurse.
THE PRESENTATION WILL BE ASSESSED ON MEETING THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
- Content that shows historic trends, influencing factors, and possible future planning?
- Relevance: Has the issue been defined in a clear and appropriate way?
- Organization, analysis, support: Is the issue sufficiently introduced and discussed? Are the issues sufficiently assessed? Are the issues clearly supported with examples that illustrate the issues? Is there an analysis of current resolutions of the issues? Are sources of materials acknowledged and appropriate? Is there discussion of the role of the community health nurse?
- Accuracy and clarity: Do the presentation clearly communicate the discussion of the issue?
- Originality: Does the presentation present an original perspective as opposed to one that relies on the words of others? Is there original and creative thought?
