Question 1

Background & Brief Considerations

Ask any home maker if they are happy with their kitchen space and many will wish they had a bigger one! We know there’s nothing that can be done with the fixed space and features but we can certainly consider a mobile kitchen island as an extension to usable space.

Consider the Kitchen Mobile Island (KMI).

This KMI is not too big and should fit into a decent-size kitchen. It extends the useful ‘working area’ for kitchen users. Besides being an island on wheels, it should also come with some practical specifications and features.

Consider the following:

Indoor use only.
The overall dimension of the KMI should be as follow; oLength – between 90 to 120 cm. o Width (Depth) – not larger than 55 cm. o Height (including the wheels) – not taller than 90 cm.
Height 2 (considering lite shelves or overhang features) – not taller than 185 cm.
Single material or combination i.e., wood, stainless steel, aluminium, rubber or plexiglass and tempered.
Storage area for some common kitchen utilities i.e., cutlery, utensils and baking equipment
Electric supply (with safety features).
Wheels with Lock features.
Child-safe i.e., no sharp corners, topple-safe.
User-friendly handles to move the KMI where necessary.
Ease of maintenance i.e., cleaning, storage.
Attached refuse receptacle at a convenient point, maintaining hygiene.
Possible expandable top i.e., to increase the top (work) area.
Lite shelves, overhang features i.e., for placement of condiments and hanging of a whip or spatula.
Aesthetics i.e., blending colors to the current trend of kitchen design.

Endeavour to research, conceptualise and develop a ‘KMI’ with all of the following in mind (or any more relevant and practical considerations). Please feel free to include any relevant options that can improve your design conceptualisation.

Question 1a

Exploration in Design – Sketches

show/develop your concepts with meaningful and clear sketches, by hand, without using any drawing software, allowing your design process to be understood and appreciated as much as possible.
Consideration for appropriate and appealing colour schemes should be evident.
Express your conceptual/developmental sketches within 1 OR 2 blank A4 sheets.
Analyse and show how your final choice of design has met the important consideration of Form and Function i.e., balancing Form and Function considerations.

Question 1b

Rationale in Design – Selection

Keeping around 150 words (spend about 15 minutes*), share your design rationale for your proposed solution in clear (legible) handwriting and an organised flow.
Help readers understand what were the inspiration(s) or consideration(s) for adopting the specific approaches or choices, resulting in the final design solution.
The organised design rationale should be presented on a single blank A4 paper sheet.

* Applicable only to an ECA’s that conducted as a Sit-In session.

Question 2

With the final design confirmed as you complete Question 1, you are to undertake the following for Question 2.

Develop a complete Isometric Projection Drawing, by hand, without using any drawing software, using as much space on a blank A4 Isometric Drawing paper as possible.

In your Isometric Projection Drawing, include the following:

Using a practical unit of measurement i.e., centimetres, generate a practical scale for your drawing e.g., a scale of 1:2.5, to fit the entire drawing onto a single Isometric Drawing (A4) paper.

Clearly annotate, using the adopted unit of measurement i.e., centimetres, all relevant parts of the design in your Isometric drawing, to give a realistic appreciation of its physical size. See the following visual reference as an example of measurement annotation.

You may decide to employ an ‘exploded view’ approach in your Isometric drawing if that can increase the clarity and appeal of the visual presentation of your design. This is a common consideration where large parts of your design are hidden from view or obstructed visually by other parts but needed to be shown for a better appreciation. See the following visual reference as an example of an exploded view presentation.

Note: When using Isometric Paper provided, avoid relying on the grid markings on the paper for measurement as they do not represent precise values. Students should however, use a regular measuring ruler to do so. The elevated (30°) anglegridline on the paper is however reasonably accurate for referencing and should be used.

Attempt to complete your Isometric Projection Drawing within 50 minutes*.
Apply your understanding of the Isometric Projection Drawing produced in Question 2, produce and complete by hand, without using any drawing software, a Two-point Perspective Sketch using as much space of a blank A4 sheet as possible.
The Two-point Perspective Sketch must be coloured according to the Colour schemes adopted earlier during the design phase for relevance and appeal.
Consider using the best orientation of the A4 sheet to optimise the Two-point Perspective Sketch i.e., Portrait or Landscape.
Attempt to complete your Two-point Perspective Sketch within 50 minutes*.
For both visuals (Isometric Drawing and Two-point Perspective Sketch), show essential drawing skills as you produce them.
On all drawings and sketches (on the answer papers), clearly include your Full Name for identification purposes.
