Scott Morrison’s ‘no slavery’ comment prompts descendants to invite him to sugar cane regions. Australia’s history as a nation that enslaved people is widely known in parts of Queensland, and the Prime Minister is being urged to see it for himself. “That will never go away, especially for us here in Bundaberg which was really the heart of things,” he said.
“People are still seeking who they really are, the scars run deep.”
Mr Turaga has campaigned for many years on issues of modern slavery in Australia’s food supply chain. In 2017, the Federal Government established an inquiry into establishing a modern slavery act after reports of horrific treatment, accommodation and conditions for foreign workers on farms and in factories. It recommended, among other things, the establishment of an independent anti-slavery commissioner as well as measures to support victims of modern slavery, including a compensation scheme.
Mr Turaga said along with dismissing the historical context, Mr Morrison’s comment set back reforms for modern workers. “The perpetrators [of modern slavery] will walk away scot free in regards to that comment that there’s no slavery in Australia,” he said.
‘Glaring ignorance’ in modern education Former Labor MP Brian Courtice has long campaigned for the contribution of South Sea Islanders to Australia’s prosperity to be recognised. In 1920, his family bought Sunnyside, a 50-hectare plantation near Bundaberg that is now a heritage listed gravesite for 29 South Sea Islanders who died while working there. He said he was astounded by Mr Morrison’s comments and called for schools to introduce the history as a dedicated subject. Mr Courtice said around Australia, 16,000 South Sea Islanders were estimated to be buried in unmarked graves like the ones on his farm.
“I’d like to see the Prime Minister come to Queensland, not with all the media circus, and speak to the South Sea Islander community and the descendants,” he said.
“I’d like to see him come to Sunnyside and have a look at 29 unmarked graves that are in our yard and come to terms with the fact that these people were treated badly.”
Keith Pitt, the current Nationals Member for Hinkler, did not want to comment on the Prime Minister’s remarks. Mr Pitt has previously supported calls for the contribution of South Sea Islanders to beacknowledged. In a speech supporting a motion in 2014 that called for Australian-born South Sea Islanders to have their own census question to reflect their position as a distinct ethnic group, he reflected on his own time working in the sugar cane industry.
“I grew up hearing stories about Kanakas and the backbreaking work they did in very difficult conditions,” he said at the time.
