Narrative/interpretive perspective – DUE with THE SECOND submission 2-3 pages
Find two different published illness narratives of individuals who have experience with this disease. At least one should be a sufferer experience, but the other could be another sufferer or someone who witnessed a sufferer’s experience – like a caregiver or medical worker.
• Briefly summarize each narrative. Provide a bit of background on the person (age, gender, role (sufferer or other). Should be no more than a couple of sentences.
• Identification of essential features of the narrative and the systematic description of the relationships among them or how things work.
o What type of illness narrative is this? (see Ch. 3 textbook)
o Who are the characters? How do they interact? What is the nature of their interaction? o What is the narrator highlighting in their story? Is there anything they are not mentioning? What is central to them?
o Are there any metaphors used? Talk about them.
• Consider the illness narrative experience themes. What do these two narratives have in common, what is different? What perspective or insight do they offer to you as a medical anthropologist.
Critical Medical (Health) Anthropology perspective – DUE WITH THE SECOND SUBMISSION
3 pages
Using a CMA (or CHA) perspective describe the political/economic situation that has led to disparities that have caused or exacerbated this health condition (see textbook).
You should mention three factors.
• In this section I am looking for you to demonstrate:
o your understanding of what CMA is and how it applies to this disease. Remember CMA is all about social inequalities.
o an understanding and explanation of the various social determinants of health or health inequalities responsible for the pattern of disease we see in the area you chose, o the role played the various environments (see Module 5 course materials). Environments are economic, social, physical and service. Think about how these environments play out on local, national and international level when you are discussing the political and economic factors.
