Response Papers
Response papers are required on all assigned readings in order to fulfill the learning objects
outlined above. Please review my comments in addition to your scores after each paper has
been evaluated. Instructions for how to view my comments and the originality report generated
by Turnitin.com are posted on the course page. You may email me questions for clarification
about my comments. You must adhere to the following guidelines to receive full credit:
A. Papers must include:
o a review of the readings. A review is not a close reading of a couple of key issues, a
string of quotes, or an essay. It is a review or summary of the main argument and the
key topics (chapter sections) that the author addresses. You are expected to address
the full range of key topics (chapter sections) with concrete examples and citations
from the assigned chapters.
o a thoughtful reflection on how/why the issues addressed in the readings are
important to you. This may include identifying an “aha” moment, a moment of
confusion or frustration, or a moment of question that you relate to your own life and
experiences. The reflection ought to be at least one full paragraph in length.
B. You are expected to include citations from the assigned chapters. Citations should be
provided whether you are summarizing/paraphrasing or quoting from the book in order to
demonstrate how and where within Canby’s argument you are working through the subjects.
Citations from the textbook ought to include the hard-copy page number or the electronic
version location number (do not only include the chapter or subheading number). Any
citations to non-course materials must include proper citations and a bibliography that follows
the rules of a standard reference guide, such as Chicago or MLA.
C. Papers that are more than 15-18% quotes from the readings may be marked down for
excessive quotation
