Assessment Description
The nurse is caring for a premature newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The mother of the baby is in a wheelchair and the father is pushing the wheelchair over to the warmer. As you talk with the parents and explain the care of their baby, you notice the father does not answer questions or ask any questions and he does not look up when you talk to him. The baby’s mother is speaking to the father in a loud and condescending voice calling him inept and stating he could not possibly understand. The mother wants to hold the baby and the father attempts to help place the baby in her arms. As the father is placing the baby in the mother’s arms, she slaps his hands away and tells him to “get out, you are not helping” and then tries to give the baby back to the nurse. The nurse takes the baby from the mother and then touches the father’s arm asking him if he would like to hold the baby. When the nurse touches the father’s arm he flinches. The
mother states, “absolutely not, he will not hold the baby” and demands the father take her back to her room.
Who is the potential abuser in this situation and what makes you think that to be true? What are your ethical obligations to this family as the baby’s nurse?
