This topic will continue to look at ethical behaviors that build trust and promote client-centered goals. Students will explore advanced directives, client advocacy, client rights, HIPAA, and the role of the nurse in obtaining consent from a client for any procedure. As nurses, it is important to be aware of the legal issues in the delivery of care to any client and the importance of documentation in the electronic health record.

Objectives:

1. Describe ethical nursing behaviors that build trust and promote client-centered goals.
2. Identify key elements of the management of care, including advanced directives, advocacy, informed consent, and client rights.
3. Define steps to keep client data secure and professionally manage client information.
4. Discuss the professional standards used to compose legally defensible client documentation that is timely, objective, factual, and complete.
