An introduction to health assessment and wellness provides students with critical information upon which the rest of the course builds. Students are provided introductory subject matter content they must learn for various types of health assessment, health promotion, infection control, HIPAA, data gathering, safety practices, and factors that affect health. Health assessment skills are practiced in the lab portion of the course.

The topic content provides students with an introduction to assessing a client’s functional health and general survey. Students will use these skills when conducting a complete health assessment in all of the subsequent topics in the course. Students will be introduced to client confidentiality and the nursing process. Additionally, students will obtain the necessary practice time to develop the skills necessary for client interaction in the clinical setting.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the elements of a general survey and health assessment.
  2. Differentiate between a comprehensive assessment and a focused assessment and when each type of assessment would be implemented.
  3. Differentiate between subjective and objective data gathered during the health assessment process.
  4. Identify client safety and privacy best practices when obtaining a health history and conducting an assessment.
  5. List major factors that affect health promotion and disease prevention throughout the life span.
