The topic content provides students with an introduction to assessing a client’s health history, functional health, ethnicity, and culture. Communication is an integral part of being able to conduct a health history, and students will use communication skills when conducting a complete assessment in all subsequent topics for the course. Additionally, students will obtain the necessary practice time to develop the essential skills for client interaction in the clinical setting. Course content provides students with the introductory subject matter content they must learn for obtaining an accurate health history and the importance of cultural, ethnic, and spiritual sensitivity and competence in the health care setting. Health history assessment and cultural
sensitivity skills are practiced in the lab portion of the course. As a professional registered nurse, the ability to complete an accurate physical assessment and accurately assess clients’ health history, ethnicity, and culture is a foundational requirement of the profession. Therapeutic communication is a skill a nurse will use every time there is contact with a client or family members.
Objectives:
- Examine key components of obtaining an accurate and current health history, including variations for culture, age, gender, ethnicity, religion, and spirituality.
- Describe the components of an effective interview to elicit an accurate and realistic history.
