NSG 316 Topic 3: Physical Assessment Techniques, Measuring Pain, and Documentation / NSG 316: Health Assessment

 

The topic content addresses the techniques used for obtaining a physical assessment, assessing pain, and completing documentation. Students will use the skills when conducting a complete assessment in all the future topics for the course. Additionally, students will obtain the necessary practice time to develop the essential skills for client interaction in the clinical setting. Course content provides students with the introductory subject matter content they must learn about client documentation and reporting, techniques for pain assessment and comprehensive physical assessment, pain and pain control, and the importance of spiritual sensitivity. Pain assessment and health assessment skills are practiced in the lab portion of the course.

Objectives:

  1. Differentiate among the assessment techniques of inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation.
  2. Differentiate among the types, causes, and characteristics of pain.
  3. Describe techniques used to assess a client’s pain.
  4. Identify changes that occur when a client’s pain is poorly controlled.
  5. Explain best practices for documenting client health history and health assessment data.
