Course Description:
This course introduces basic principles of pharmacotherapy used in health promotion/maintenance and disease prevention for diverse populations across the life span. Students learn principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacogenetics/genomics, and study drug classifications and corresponding
mechanisms of action, including pathophysiological effects. Use of the nursing process in developing a comprehensive approach to the clinical application of drug therapy is also discussed. Prerequisite: Admission into the nursing program.
Course Objectives:
The following are the overall objectives for this course:
- Describe concepts associated with basic medication safety.
- Explain basic principles of pharmacotherapy used in nursing practice.
- Differentiate between pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacogenetics/genomics.
- Identify drug classifications along with the prototypes according to each body system and how these pharmaceuticals affect the human body.
- Use the nursing process to learn how to safely care for clients undergoing drug therapy.
- Calculate accurate medication dosages.
