In Topic 10, students are introduced to drug classifications for the various body systems and infectious processes, including mechanism of action, indications for use, and major adverse effects. Antibiotic stewardship (prevention of resistance) will be a point of discussion.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the mechanism of action, indications for use, and major adverse effects of selected drugs used to treat a variety of infections.
  2. Discuss the role of alternative and complementary therapies for a variety of infections.
  3. Identify client-related factors that influence the effects of drugs used to treat a variety of infections.
  4. Use the nursing process to determine safe care for a client who is receiving medications to treat a variety of infections.
  5. Examine factors leading to the development of antibiotic resistance.
