Topic 12 introduces students to drug classifications for the GI and GU body systems, including mechanism of action, indications for use, and major adverse effects. Students will receive an introduction to reproductive drugs, but they will be covered in additional detail in a future nursing course.
Objectives:
- Discuss the mechanism of action, indications for use, and major adverse effects of selected drugs that affect the gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) systems.
- Discuss the role of alternative and complementary therapies for conditions of the GI and GU systems.
- Identify client-related factors that influence the effects of drugs that affect the GI and GU systems.
- Use the nursing process to determine safe care for a client who is receiving medications that affect the GI and GU systems.
